gear selection problem!

Hi, I wonder if anyone can save me some exploration time and advise me on how to fix my early bay gear selection difficulties?
I have a 71 bay with a Scat bus shifter. I'm having difficulty selecting 1st gear and coming down from 3rd to second. It doesn't go into 1st easily and when trying to find second it crunches like its going into reverse. I think this is quite common. I've seen some forums say it's the shift plate that needs moving but I'd like to know if anyone has had the same problem and how it was cured?

I fitted a urethane gearshift coupling to mine to remove most of the slop in the shift

When I bought my bus two years I was getting the same thing plus I kept slipping into reverse when I was trying to go into 2nd. I changed the gear stick to the scat which stop me going into reverse but second still crunches....I've sorted out a re con gearbox.
