quick one guys how can you tell the difference between an early and late?

any numbers anywhere other than the individual item stamps?

An early box doesn't have the mounting lugs on the top. They hang on the nose cone alone.
 
Yeah just realised whats wrong I've not been reading it right, after 68 gearbox casing changed, as did the final drive assembly and the thrust assembly....

Anyone know why bus engines are supported at both ends when bug engines aren't? I know bug engines were smaller capacity, but surely they don't weigh much less than a bus engine?

Please feel free to flame me if I've just asked the most stupid question ever - it's been a long day...

Beetle gearbox supported on nose cone & at the ends of the
frame horns (same as splits) engine bolted with 4 bolts

I thought it was because of the larger flyweel producing more torque. Beetle only has a 180mm flywheel.
