does a late bay gearbox go straight in to an early bay?if not whats involved

Its not too bad to do, The input shaft and the selecta rod need adjusting with an angle grinder

On a similar subject has anyone fitted a 1303 box in a bay? Would it be strong enough?

Strongy depends on which one, 3 rib / 5 rib / 6 rib.....

75> the bell was deeper as was the input shaft and the starter throw was longer, no real issues and i'm sure you'll enter it with your usual gusto ....
