does anyone on here know what i can fit to my bay. the one i have on it is a three rib standard one as my van is a 1600. after some thing a bit chunkier. i have found someone selling a 5 speed out of a 1984 water cooled caravelle. does anyone know weather this would fit

Gearboxes from watercooled T25's can be fitted but won't be of much benefit to you - this is because you will gain another (lower range) 1st gear rather than a higher top gear for cruising - it's a real shame because it could solve all our problems to chuck a 5 speed VW box in!!!

;)

They are more robust but like I said, I wouldn't bother! It won't be a straight swap and when you drove it for the first time you'd be asking yourself why you bothered at all!

Leave it alone and dream about that Porsche 915 'box you've always promised yourself! 8)

;)

now your talking. my local porsche scrappers told me he has a 911 3.0 sc he said i can rag it round his yard for a bit then had the anfine and 915 box for 2.5k. one day it will happen

If the T25 5 speed box will fit, why not have the T25 box with a rebuild to the ratios you want. Surely this would be a lot cheaper. Especially if you have the T25 box altered internally prior to being fitted.

The problem with this option is the expense, rebuilding a 'box with different ratios is mucho expensive, by the time you've finished you could have fitted that Porsche 5-speed box!

its become more popular to use t25 boxes as the price of 2ltr bay ones have escalated and they can be converted from side to nose shift or yopu can convert to the side shift shift rods

HOwever I wouldnt bother with the 5 spd or the porsche unless you have serious £ to blow. I had my 2ltr bay box re ratiod and rebuilt by cogbox for about £700 and very happy with the result. Still not a cheap option tho!

I dont know what wheels you run but a big mistake a lot of people make is stick tiny 14/15 inchers on with low profiles.....thus lowering the gearing massivly - so if you havent got a wheel tyre combo as tall as you can aesthetically get away with then perhaps you should start here. I run 17s with 205/55 (i think) that gives me about the same rolling diameter as OG wheels but much nicer looking (IMO)

also its worth considering if you have the engine to push any of the above along. my 100bhp 1776 didnt make the most of the ratios in my box so a stock 1600 is not going to either.....(unless you put smaller wheels on in which case youve just wasted lots of money)

interesting stuff, this i am wondering if playing around with the gearbox will help me gain a few more mph. :D

hi rich ive been following your thread on vwkd. your van is gona be the business when its done. funny enough ive already bought some fifteens with 60 profiles on. but i do have two boxster s fronts almost the same as your rims so if i find another pair they might become an option too.
there is just so many options out there. is a 2.0cc camper box a straight fit. and what is a good price for one. im gona be running a quad cam alfa 1.7 with about 120 brake. as ive had an alfa 145 boxer round the back of my workshop for months and it started first time on the weekend so its won its place back at the front of the engine que

Cogbox rebuilt a 1600 box with 2 lt spec for me --final drive ratio of 4.57
mated to 2lt motor (very heavy van with full devon interior) cruises at an easy 75mph @ 3500 revs . I no longer hanker for a 5th gear.

cheers for the comments on the bus - ill get there one day!

these days the going rate for the boxes seems to be £200-250 std second hand unit - and ive seen them at shows for £400!!!!!

fitting a 2ltr box is pretty str8 forward - basically swap the front mount, swap the bellhousings and swop the input shaft and your there.

in std form though the 2ltr wont make a huge difference - i think about 3mph - nevertheless they are stronger boxes and you would do well to upgrade and then you can always get it cog boxed at a later date. I think im right in saying that cog box reckoned 9-12mph difference or a drop on revs of 900 RPM. something like that - it was a few years ago now!!!

theres also another gearbox place called BEars that advertise on VZi - apparently as good as Cogbox so might be a little more competitive.
