Good places to vist on the south coast (east of Brighton)?

We thought we would head east instead of predictably heading west into Cornwall for a week, mainly because we realised that we have no idea of what's beyond Brighton and it would be nice to go somewhere different.

Just looking at Google maps to see where we could visit isn't helping, so would anybody have any recommendations for days out and interesting places to visit along the south east coast?

Back to the question... Lewes is really nice and also along the South Downs and South Downs Way is Alfriston, both are good bases for walking if that's your thing with pubs and tea rooms.

If your a National trust member then Bodiam Castle, Nymans Gardens and Sheffield Park are good especially if you have young kids.

I second visiting Alfriston, very picturesque and a great view from up on the downs when you drive a bit further inland.
If you like gardens, there is the famous Sissinghurst (Vita Sackville West), and Great Dixter (Christopher Lloyd) not far inland from Rye at Northiam, where there is also a steam train and a river boat trip you can do nearby.

If you like good food, look up The Hungry Monk - home of the banoffee pie, and Rose Cottage.

If you like cycling, I think there is a national cycle route you can take through Rye and surrounding areas.

Park Farm campsite near Bodiam Castle is a good place to stay.
They let you have a fire which is always good
Pevensey Castle is just down the road from me and that`s worth a look, if you likes a bit of history.
I took my son for a bike ride to Cuckmere Haven today and would recommend that on foot or bike.
I`m quite lucky living here as always plenty to do .

Thanks for your feedback everybody.

We had a fantastic time, very much assisted by the amazing weather. We found ourselves in a little camp site in Alfriston in the end which despite the facilities being very basic was as cheap as chips and perfectly located. It's a great little village with some fantastic walks across the downs and towards the sea, the food in the George pub was cracking.

We we're expecting to use the camp site as a base to scout around the local towns and villages but with the sun out all day long we just grabbed a bit of a picnic from the local post office shop and just wandered up into the hills to watch the sheep watching the para-sailers and take in the views.

We'll definitely be heading down that way again as there's plenty of places we didn't visit, including Lewes so when we do we'll be sure to pop in for a pint at the Pelham Arms
