Goverment scrappage scheme rubbish for many reasons.
I wont go into it too heavily here as we are here to perv on the Ghia, but:
Garage and repair network:
Think about all the independent garages out there that will be forced to join the JSA line because there are no older cars on the road to fix - all the new cars wont need fixing because they will be covered by the manufacturer's warranty.
Supply network:
Following on from the point above, this is a domino-effect. Now think where those garages get the parts for the 'old metro'. More businesses will struggle.
More Debt:
Why does someone own the Metro in the first place? Thats because that is the only car they can afford. Signing up to this scheme just adds to their debt by placing a car they cant afford on finance. They will probably default on the payments meaning more unpaid debt goes back into the economy.
Environmental impact?
We all know running your old Bus, Montego, Metro, Granada is more 'green' than buying a new vehicle when taking into account the raw power and materials used to make the new vehicle. So, what is the purpose of this scrappage scheme? - Its not to help the environment so it must be to increase new car sales and help a struggling industry.... Well taking a few grand off a car isnt really going to help when in the UK we pay FAR more than other countries in tax - not just for BUYING the new vehicle, but running it in fuel tax too.. So, how about cutting that kind of tax to put more money into people's pockets which will then organically increase the chance of a high-risk large purchase such as a new car.
Modern Classics?
Can you imaging if this scheme was implemented 40 years ago? This forum would not exist. This whole VW scene would not exist because everyone would have traded in their bus for a Austin Maestro. Point being - there are alot of cars around now that could be a classic and worth keeping, but instead they will be scrapped.
I suppose in the grand scheme of things, we will all end up driving hybrids and only playing with 'petrol' engines for fun. So the modern classics will then be early examples of hybrid cars - if you see how I am thinking..

All I say is
