sorry for a load of questions lateley, but i need to ask them :p

My last air cooled VW was a 1303, at the time i was 16 and learning evry thing i knew from trial and error, at the time we didnt have the internet, so i didnt lear much, any way, i managed to kill 3 engines through overheating and general abuse!

now i dont want this to happen on the bay, so i want a nice collection of guages on the dash so i know every thing that is going on!

my ideas were;

Oil Temp
Oil Preshure
and
Volts

would these be the best option ? if so where is the best place to put the senders? and can i have some photos of your dash layouts with the guages fitted, i do like the stock look, but am open to ideas.

oh i will also be fitting a monster tacho, just because i love how they look on the dash :)

thanks

Mark

mark, i have a really nice autogauge monster tach in mint condition forsale £70 +postage

For oil temp I use a VDO dipstick sender, just remember that the temps displayed are only a rough indicator - you are looking for trends rather than absolute an temperature to indicate a problem.
For oil pressure I used a vdo dual sender that replaces the stock oil pressure sender screwed into the case just behind the dizzy, get a 0-5 bar one (and matching gauge) as you wont ever use the 5-10 bar part of the gauge unless something has gone majorly wrong.

Some people also use cylinder head temp connected to #3 spark plug again as an indicator of impending head problems.

Of course an engine in good condition that has been well maintained shouldnt need any gauges
And with all these gauges there is a danger that you arent looking at the road

You need to be aware of the limitiations of a 1600 in a heavy van when loaded with camping kit, remember its about getting there in style rather than at speed

In your wanted list it says 1600 airbox - is that a stock oil bath air filter you are after? as I have one going spare, have a look in the for sale section for my thread.

Gauges can make you paranoid too, I have an oil temp in my bus (fitted by PO) and find myself constantly checking it on trips.

yeah i know what youa re saying, but i hate not knowing, i think if i din't have a guage, i would be constantly worrying that the engine was going to blow!!

i have a few VDO guages at home i'll have a lokk whats there :p

im note sure what part of the air box i need yet, i'm picking the van up tonight, so will take some photos and you can tell me what i'm missing.

Thanks

Mark
