Not sure if this is normal or not,but when I replaced my rear brake shoes, cylinders and cables (which where the same length as those removed, one was snapped) I loosened the handbrake adjuster on the lever first, then adjusted the rear shoe adjusters with the wheels in the air until they lock then slacken three turns so the wheel spins freely. Then adjust the handbarke until I get six clicks. On testing the brakes and handbrake work fine. The problem arises when I let the car to the floor the handbrake comes fully on and the bus won't move! If I then let the handbrake cable fully off the bus now rolls but if I go over a bump the handbrake comes on! To get over this I slackened the rear shoe adjusters off a further few turns.
It seems what is happening is there is a short outer cable which goes to the rear drum itself then to the solid metal outer handbrake cable tube under the bus.Now when jacked up this outer cable sits in both ends, but when I let it down the outer cable gets stretched and pulls the handbrake on.

What is going on? The cables came from Schofields and where marked for the right year and where the same as those removed?

Hmmmmm!

So as I hear it the bakes come on with the movement of the rear suspension....

Sounds like the routeing is wrong and that theres a pivot point acting on the cable and pulling it on... Is it both or just one side?

It is when the bus is jacked up,the short length of outer cable sits in the back plate and handbrake tube correctly. But when you let it down due to the axle rotating upwards,it pulls the outer cable away from the handbrake cable tube slightly which pulls the handbrake on.It happens on both sides.
I've just read the haynes manual and it does say to adjust the handbrake cable with the lever pulled to the sixth click so that the rear wheels are just binding and then a further three or four clicks locks the wheels up.

At the moment I have the cables backed right off on the adjuster and the star adjusters backed off a couple more turns. The handbrake holds firmly.I'll give it another adjust up and check out later in the week, because I've done over 500 miles since replacing the parts, maybe now it's bedded in it will adjust properly now?
