Sorry for the title!!

I wondered if anyone had ever managed to fit an alternator with the engine in situ - I managed it on Joy's bug - but it was tricky!!

Mine a Xover if that makes any difference?

;)

I would have thought by the time you fiddle about trying to fit it, you could have had the engine out and back in a few times!

I know what you're saying, but because of some unresolved 'garage height issues' I can't jack the van up at the mo'!!

;)

Read the first bit, and was gonna say due on the 17th Feb (according to the midwife)..........

But in answer to your question, think it can be done in situ, but awkward? Think there has been a thread on this, but cant remember where i saw it.sorry not much help........

Cheers!

I've just done it with the engine out, and it's still a pig of a job.
Thanks to Machine 7 though for the quick replacement alternator after the original they supplied had a bent shaft and distorted pulley....

I got my engine out this morning, taking my time and being quiet due to it being early, it was my first time and took me about 45 mins, I drove my van out of the garage, had the back end near the garage, no cuts I did get a load of fuel over me though.

replaced my alternator with the engine in situ at euro bug in 1 after my bearings went.
was fairly simple to do but i was glad i had twin dellorto 36s on so had no manifold in the way!

did mine with the engine in last year. hard bit was getting the nut off the fan. rest was ok really. have stock carb etc.also replaced manifold boots at the same time.
