Head colour - advice

Guys

Just taken the heads off my old engine and one side valves are black and sooty and the other is light brown - any ideas what's going on?

I was going to re-use these as they look pretty new and are vw stamped.

Are you running twin carbs ? Were the plugs the same on both sides ? Otherwise an issue with manifolds possibly ? Has one head been changed ?

Nope single carb. Were on when I got the bus and they look a similar age!!

Not that i know what i'm talking about but first i would check the manifold boots if it's twin port,I would have thought if one is split or leaking than the extra air would make that side run weak?

I'm guessing the lite brown was the 3&4 side? if so could be the norm cuz it's the hot side and or plug wires are getting weak on the black side
what was the compression ?

Yes the light brown was 3 and 4 - going to clean them up and use them again
