Can some one please clarify whether all models early, cross over and late have the same indicator arms

Mine used to control indicators and switching between high beam and main beam (if you wanted to flash you had to switch high beam on and then off)

Is this correct only i don't seem to be able to switch high beam on now.

Is there any model that would have had the switch for high beam seperate but still have the flash on the indicator arm??

I am sure these things don't break just sitting around, mine was working before the refurb

Early indicator arms only have a high beam switch when pulled up, I think but am not totally sure later ones have the flash function as well.

May be worth checking your relay, do you have a friendly bus owning mate you can borrow thiers to try, im sure that was the cause on my old bus, i think the arm thickness is the only difference :?: but not 100% on this. ;)

I think indicator arms are different & have a different number of wires depending on the year, see wiring diagrams here:

Previously i had the ability to switch between high beam and main beam but no flash (i had to switch on / off to mimic flash)

But now my arm doesn't apear to even click when pulled, it is as if there is a flash facility rather than a switch.

As if the indicator arm is different / has been swaped.

1 check fuse

2 check live wire is going to the relay big fat red one on my 71

3 check solder joints on arm itself once taken off the coloum and taken out of case

4 check the flash check its making contact on the mech

Yep and its a right pain in the ass, you tend to find that over a period of time the solder joints on the arm become brittle or dry and tend to affect things like the headlamp flash function or sometimes the indicators.

The wiring does change depending whether it was a US bus or not and they come with either 5 or 8 wires from memory. its worth gently taking the switch off and checking all the connections are still there, make sure you don't lose the 2 screws holding the plastic housing round the steering column as they are 'headless' as such to fit down the hole and normal screws won't fit.

There is a piece that activates the flash/main beam switch and I have seen these broken off in the past which stops it working, when it gets to that stage its find a new switch time and they vary between £50 - £80 depending if you can find one or not.

filister heads ;)

depends on what you mean by taking the mech apart, its virtually impossible to strip it in its entirety and be able to reassemble but you can break it down enough to give it a good clean and reflow the solder joints, replace the springs if required......

Araon

I knew there was a funny name for them headless screws but couldn't remember it when I was writing the post, thanks for correcting me

there a pain to get hold of here, I had to drill one out for the same reason as this thread sorted some on ebay from the states  cheaper and easier to get hold of that way even with the postage bizarely

OK i haven't checked the relay yet mainly because there used to be a obviouslt switch on the arm between main and high beam. Now there is only a flash so i belive this is the arm thats caput.

I have taken the screws from around the colar and then the two screws holding the mechanism in the arm. The connections (5 i think) are ok from the external view but was very tempted to bend the retaining clips and have a butchers in side - is this a no no then.

Any one got one up for grabs???

evening

turkish when you say refurb what do you mean you had work done on your van and it was all working then or something else or am i just beeing!

cheers leon

I meant the bus has been off the road for around 10 months while we did a refurb, before the work started it worked and now it doesn't

Update and some further explanation needs just for peace of mind.

Eventually got round to looking in to this, now remember it was working before we started the refurb, tried a new arm that didn't work / tried a new relay that didn't work so off to the friendly Dub Doktor for some investigating.

It turns out that the relay i have is 5 pin (56, 56a, 56b S, 30), on the wiring diagram for my year it shows only 4 wires / pins (as above but no 30). So further investigations (on Samba i think) shows a sloution of a bridge between two pins (can't remember numbers). This appeared to work but only while the lights are on, so after some head sratching worked out it should be a permantent live feed to the 30 pin.

So rectified with an unsed live feed found on a spare relay slot and now all working :D

But now i am more currious as to what changed between before the refurb and after.

Am i right in saying the early bay does have a 4 pin relay and that the arm allows selection between high and dipped beam and to flash requires switching the arm twice if you have lights on?

And that the 4 pin relay is like rocking horse ****?

If so then i must be right in assuming that some sneeky russian took my relay to benefit themselve because they didn't have the brains to work out how to resolve the swap from 4 pin to 5 pins relay.

Scum bag :x

Mines got a 5 pin relay that I recently had to swap out - had problems with my switch (wires were pinched and a fiddle solved it - nightmare to diagnose!) - my issue was that the relay was staying on high beam and not switching back, my knackered old relay was staying on main so knew it was a problem with the switch somewhere,

With a multi meter worked out that all the switch was doing was sending a ground signal to the relay when pressed - which flipped the relay from main/high - so no flash as all the switch does it change mode from high to low - push to make without any hold-on if that makes sense? All the smart stuff is done at the relay

mines a 71 so may be different and have to turn on/off main to flash which is a PITA but short of wiring in a new switch can't resolve has the OG one on mine just grounds out on contact - that's what I found out, glad you got your's sorted as must have been a nightmare to work out that someone swiped your relay!

headlamp flashers work by ign feed to headlamp relay feed from light switch when lights turned off, ignition feeds looped from switch to switch in series cant remember terminal no,look in haynes for wiring wll show.
