How close to the engine can I safely weld?

I've just taken the carpet up from the rear shelf above the engine bay and it's pocked with rust holes where the rear seal is buggered. Obviously this sits directly above the engine so do I need to take the engine out to weld this or would it be safe? I'm thinking I might just use aluminium mesh and filler rather than burn the garage down!!!

If you cover the engine with something non-flammable you won't have a problem.

There's always going to be a risk but cover it and have a regular look and have an extinguisher to hand. In the old days when I worked on ships we used to have a fire watcher who would stand on the other side of where we were welding to make sure nothing went up in smoke.

I used to do the firewatch thing when I was a kid working in a garage during the school holidays. The bloke doing the welding got proper annoyed at me one day when he got a facefull of CO2 after he set light to the carpet of the car he was welding the floorpan on!!
