Just got back from a 200 mile round trip to Bakewell this weekend (well only actually went yesterday morning so it was a quick trip) and as I sat in the bus debating life (because the radio doesn't work, they are about 200 cars stuck behind me on the hill which I am trying to ignore, and the van is toddling along at 55mph at her peak) I started thinking...

Why doesn't the satnav come with gradients?

When did I develop this deep fear of motorways?

Why did I stupidly brake when I saw the speed camera sign when I was already 12mph under the limit anyway (would have been chuffed to have got to 60mph on the hill)?

But, deviating from the actual question, how many of you are solo women owners? (not wives etc) But actually own the buses and do the maintenance yourself?

Was just curious as when I posted about basic mechanical repairs and hoping to do the techender course in September, everyone calls you 'mate' on the replies, which seemed more of a blokey term ....am quite happy to be a matey though!

There must be a few other females out there though who own vans?

Val

Hiya mate!

I own my van....well me and the 2 kids do.... just bought him in March this year. I do lots of jobs myself.....fitted the interior etc but I don't touch the mechanics .....I go to a man that can for that.
I'm also based in Coventry!

How do matey

I'm a lady owner and do pretty much everything myself now.. I had a fair bit of work done when i first bought the bus and then decided very quickly i had to learn basic mechanics as the garage bills just got silly. I'll put my hand to anything really if I have to, but on the other hand I'm very lucky to have guys on here that point me in the right direction. There are just some things I couldn't do. :D Over the last year I've found that when you actually start doing the job (I upgraded from a single to twin carbs which I fitted myself) and stop thinking about it, it's quite easy really. The hardest part is contorting yourself to get to the parts that need fitting!!

55mph on a hill.. Your bus must be turbo charged Val! ;)

Ps - If your ever stuck drop me a line I'm not a million miles away from you & more than happy to pass on the few little life saver tips I've been taught :D

Going to sneak in here under the radar!! :msn4:

My wife and I both jointly own our Ermintrude and she's very much a joint project. She was the one into dubs when I met her, she'd just never found anyone to team up with! Both of us will turn our hands to any job. Its why I always say 'we' on my posts on here (in case people think I have a split personality!!!) In a bizarre sort of we're a bit role reversal in that I fuss over the interior and paintwork more and she's the one with the WD40 and Gaffa tape!! Hmmmmm Oh dear!

See I am happy to do interior stuff, it's the mechanics I've got to learn :(

Have actually found a really nice/cheap/good vw man mechanic (balsall common), but would like a bit of knowledge in case it just stops when i am out somewhere in her. A bit neurotic at the moment that she will overheat/blow up/go up in flames everytime I go out. Was really chuffed she did the 200 mile, so off again next weekend in her

The 55mph was on the downhill... :( ..more like 20mph on the bakewell hills!

I'm happy to have a go with her engine 'bits' if I know what I am doing (used to do plugs and points years ago on the old ford escort. Also had to change the head gasket on a maestro years ago when i blew the core plugs out because i never put any antifreeze in :? )

She isnt actually 'broke' atm so dont want to mess around with her yet

how many blokes clicked this hoping for pictures?or was it just me

think someone should start a lady owners gallery :p

Bear in mind we have chosen to spend our hard earned money on a heap of tin that looks like a loaf of hovis, I don't think we are going to be your typical handbag and perfume types.... :?

:lol:i only see motorbikes :?

I'm a female owner but I do have a husband. I do 99% of the work on my bus though. The only thing I don't do to it is adjust the points and the valves. I can do those things but just prefer to let my hubby do it. I will do my own brakes, tune ups, pull motor if need be and etc. I love doing the work on my bus and prefer it that way!! :D
