I’ve got a1978 Bay but for some reason it seems to eat Starter Motors I’ve had 4 since I bought it 5 years ago
has anyone else had a similar problem ?
The van is an Automatic don’t do masses of mileage I had the last one fitted 4 months ago & gone again,
I’ve been buying Elstock Starter Motors anybody got a clue why this is happening

Hi guys, what sort of motor do you have ? I’m guessing a type 4 as it’s automatic. A couple of things could be happening as in there’s a bush on some to slide the starter into, these could be problematic if not quite right. But eating starters sounds like it may not be turning the starter off once you’ve started the motor, or possibly just staying engaged. If you can get under while the motor is running, listen to the starter , is it still running? Go careful with them flippin autos and don’t get yourself run over

Ozziedog,,,,,,,,,,,,,somebody smarter will be along shortly :)

Could be wrong but think the auto starter is the type with its own bush?? Check the teeth on the ring gear and count them as well just in case its wrong. Does the starter sound noisy when new as that will indicate bad meshing.

Not noisy when new, I’ve had one that fell apart when it was taken off. The latest one is still on being taken out later, makes a clicking noise then nothing.
Checked all the electrics etc. But it was feeling hot last time I tried to start him, the one before wasn’t engaging properly, so will check that it’s still in one piece when it’s taken off

There is a specific starter for an Auto its quite a bit bigger than the standard one, I have them in my bug and bus as they do away with the need to use the bearing in the bell housing. What starter do you have ?
