I've scored the use of a really nice cottage for the weekend.

My sisters boss basically and he is a bit of a wine connoisseur, he won't take any money but said just leave a bottle of wine.

Now this is the tricky bit, how much would you spend? I'm not out to embarass myself and was thinking something round the £100 mark.

Tough one, i know nothing about wine but know you predicament

Not too sure if £££'s is that important but unless you know his taste it's a mine field

I presume there may be a local shop or boozer buy this holiday home of his, perhaps ask in there he must be a regular so they might know

Good luck

If it we're me rather than buying one bottle at a £100 I'd leave 3 bottles each around the £20 mark, loads of nice wine about at that price and your bound to get at least one he likes. Hell also probly prefer 3 to try. I personally think wines for women ;) I'd get him a nice single malt :)

You could try and find a wine merchant that does gift vouchers? Oddbins? Very diificult to choose wine for people I think. I have sometimes raved about a wine only to have my friends say "it's allright - not bad" :?

i'd go to a wine merchant and take their recommendations, buy 3 for the money as suggested above. Is there a Laithwaites near you? I wouldn't do vouchers as there's nothing like getting something bought for you even if it might not be your taste, you would have made the effort, that's what counts..

If it was me, I'd go to majestic and ask them to recommend a red, a rose and a white at around £20 each, as mentioned above, because as with many products there is a very good middle ground, with some expensive wines being overpriced to make a killing from the people who just want to spend big.
If you wanted a recommendation, cloudy bay is a good start and can be found in Costco. Where abouts are you?

I promise I didn't copy you matt, it just took me about ten minutes to write my reply.

Anything above £6.99 for taste (2008 taxed prices) :)

Anything above is brand label 'snobbery' or subject to individual taste.

The issue is a £100 bottle of wine could taste like pee where as a 4.99 bottle from tesco could be lush. It's all down to taste. Why don't u ask what their fav wine is or sneak a peak at their bottles. Also if I may be so bold. Do they really want you to spend that kind of money? I've drunk some serious wine in my time and my fav is Ogle from tesco about six quid a bottle. Also do they like French Italian or new world wine it's a mine field better just ask

Or stick with Del Boy Trotter, a nice Chateaneuf Du Pape Rodney :D

Morrisons cellar you can get a mixed box of 12 bottles for about £60.00

Good brands of wine as well.

Gives him a choice!
