Hi

A friend of mine is looking t getting a type2 but her licence only covers her for an automatic. Just wondered how rare auto boxes aren't type 2's or how hard is it to fit an auto box into a camper which as a manual?

Also if anyone knows of any auto campers please let me know.

Thanks

Only fitted to later bays. They are pretty rare generally and not great so I've read. I had a T25 auto for a while that was pretty cool though.

only fited to lates fitted with the type 4 engine, 73 on with the 1700, 76 on 1800, and then 77 on 2 litre, i'm a 2 litre auto, the earlier upto 76 are a 003 vacumn box, the later is an 010 box which is better, this box went on to be fitted to t25's and audis etc - the problem is it's only a 3 speed box so the throw from 2-3 is a fair one, as a result pulling a fully loaded westy we suffer uber **** mpg, if i'm towing a trailer and me the wife and 2 dogs go for a week we've had 12mpg round the hills of wales....... usually it's 18 - 20 best!

I had a late bay automatic! 8) it was awesome...................while it lasted! the gear box ****** in the end and dumped its contents on the motorway  also it was a pig to start as you had to make sure that the selector was in the perfect place or it would not start.

Apart from that i loved it apart from it being a late................

One option is to import one, automatics are more common in the USA, but then it will be LHD of course.

that will be the inhibitor in the selector lever - i bypassed mine.... trouble is you can start it in drive.

Not a prob with my late 2l with autobox, worked a treat, the bus then rotted around the motor and box....

My mate has an early bay with a 1.8 Passat engine and auto box in it, but that's one uber rare conversion!
