how to fit a 1971 starter motor

hi all

ive had a search on here and not quite found what i need so if any one has any links pics or info on how to fit my starter on my 71 1600cc, i fitted one last week and it went today, took it back and the guy there said it wasnt fitted right because when you wiggled the shaft it shaked from side to side, he said i didnt fit the bush(which i think is the copper piece lookes like plumbers pipe about 20mm long)is this right and where does it go? and they said something about a pin?

like i say, any help will be great, pics n linkmaybe easier for me to suss..

Have you got a Bentley guide ?

Haven't had to remove it myself yet, but the Bentley has 4 or 5 pages on the starter motor which is more helpful than the Haynes.
If you can borrow one or buy one you will certainly appreciate it.

Have you tried the Samba website which is quite helpful as well. Can't get on it though at the mo. :lol:

The shaft of the starter sits in a bush in the casing

This needs to be tapped in, if there is one in there which I imagine there is it's probably worn and needs taking out, this can be done using a M12 tap & a bit of patients

AWSOME MATE!!

STARTER OUT, BUSH OUT, BUSH IN and STARTER IN BROOM BROOM.....

!!! NOW MY IGNITION LOOM IS PLAYING UP!!!!

if i turn the ignition on and cross the wires it starts but it wont let me start straight of the key it wont let me turn it round to the possition that turns it over aahhhhh!!!!!

a fault in the plastic casing i think, any ideas
