My Headlights!!

I've been having issues over the past few weeks with my headlights. For some reason they would not go onto high beam. I have tried 2 GSF relays and all they done was make them stay on high beam.

So, I bought a couple of used relays at bustypes, tried them while I was there and both worked fine with no problems at all.

I had been driving the van today and flashed somebody I knew (headlights) the relay clicked and all seemed fine. On my way home tonight, I went to flick onto high beam but there was nothing there, no click from the relay. I tried the other relay I had bought......this worked on Sunday but now doesn't work :x

Does anyone have any ideas...is something shorting causing the relays to blow??

I would appreciate any help.

Matt

Time to buy a new van ;)

LOL!!! That would be the easy option  Is the relay you bought still working??

I will check the fuses when its light. I didn't think that the switches often failed. It seems strange that the lights change from dipped to main beam depending on the relay.

haven't got round to trying my relays but need to as the MOT is due in June, although i did cheat and bought a brand new relay just in-case.
The 1 thing i have noticed is since moving my relay's out of the bottom of the fuse box (just made some wires up and mounted the relay's somewhere else) i've not had any more issues with relays, because my screen leaks it was dripping onto the fuse box and filling up my relays with water. I had 3 headlight relays and about 4 indicator relays before i moved them but at the moment everything is cool (but need to replace headlight relay)

I would suspect water leak from windscreen. My old van used to do it. Check the connection and clean them up

Thanks guys, I will have a look over the weekend and go through all of the connections and clean them all up.

Is it best just to trace back all of the wiring to make sure its all eathed correctly and nothing has come lose?

So as I read it you flashed an on coming vehicle using the stalk? right...

since then its not working?

Think fuse at this point also look at cleaning the contacts on the slalk mounted switch there easy to get at a piece of wet and dry on the contacts will remove any pitting, and clean with a degreasant....

fibre pen on the contacts of the fusebox and all the fuse caps, and go through all the connections cleaning where necessary

These relays are very simple to fix. Take off the cover and you will see two sets of fixed contacts and an arm with two contacts that flips between them. If they've had water in them the contacts will be corroded. Just clean them carefully with very fine (400 grit) wet and dry, used dry. I've revived 4 like this in the past year or so!

I thought I had iffy relays, but new ones didnt fix, turned out to be play in the switch, the bent metal tangs that hold it together.

It was the switch on mine when that happened. Luckily, it was on the way to BVF so I got a new one there :D

Does anyone have any (colour) wiring diagrams for this? Mine isnt flashing, the orange wire - from the stalk, is hanging under the dash, but where does it go? Headlamp relay I presume? Its a 68 US model.

:)

I cant find orange in any of the colour codings....sure its not a bleeched brown....

bk/y - rear light L
bk/r - rear light R
bk/v - flasher relay 54st
bk/w - flasher relay VL and side light in indicator L
bk/g - flasher relay VR and side light in indicator R
bk/w/g - flasher relay 49a and emergency switch k on bk
br - instrument common
br/w - dimmer relay

That rogue orange wire goes to a female on the back of the speedo unit .... it was critical in making the 'flash' ..... what a releif. :)
