Hi there I'm new to the forum as I've only just purchased my 1970 bay.
My question is what conversions are available on the market to change the steering to a modern rack and pinion design, as I hate the feel or should I say lack of it that I get when driving. Any help would be greatly appreciated, cheers Chris.

Have you replaced the draglink etc? I only ask as I had about 5" of play when I first piked mine up. Got the draglink and steering dampner changed and it's now lovely!

To be honest I do really need to get under there and have a play around. I'm new to all this and I know the the steering is made up of a lot of connections, just wondered if going more modern would reduce the amount of connections and have a nice responsive feel. I will def have a look at the things you mentioned and hopefully I might get a good feel from it finally.

Nah, the amount of connections will pretty much stay the same whatever you do, unless you put the steering wheel behind the front seat. You will find that a steering rack naturally has less play, but the conversion is expensive and messy. New or known good steering boxes are pricey, too. So don't jump to that. A steering box'll last 40 years, but the ball joints tend to only last five or so, so you will probably find it's one or two of those, and they're a tenner each.
Jack the bus up, axle stands, and get someone to move the steering wheel back and forth (focus on the area of play, get the wheels to wiggle a bit but don't waste time going lock to lock) and lie underneath. You'll be able to see one part moving and the other part not moving. May be in two or three joints.

Defo don't splash out on a rack conversion just yet- you might have to only spend a fiver rather than £500.
