so it seems that twin carbs/ uprated exhaust will increase performance on a 1600. My expectations are not high but would this enable me to cruise at say 60-65 mph rather than 50-55 mph at the moment (much less on a gradient!) Thanks

If you van cannot currently cruise above 50-55mph, you need a service, not twin carbs.

My stock 1600 will cruise all day at 60. That's a stock carb, air filter, exhaust and everything else.

I picked up a pair of ex alfa DRLA 36's for about £120 a couple of years ago. They needed correct sized idle jets which cost about £12. Then i had the top drilled and tapped so the air filter would attach.
I got the complete kit (manifolds, Linkage and air filters) from volksworld show for about £150.
Then it was just a few quid more on some fuel hose and a new fuel filter.
I found a NOS stainless steel exhaust manifold at Stonor for £40 and then sorted out a back box for about £30.

My bus has a 009 with pertronix ignition and bosch blue coil plus 8mm HT leads.

Considering it has never been set up on a rolling road it goes well and being sensible sized carbs fuel economy is ok.
It definitely has more oomph up hills and could cruise at 70 if i wanted to.

i wouldn't bother with a progressive carb at £300, my mechanic hates them as the linkage doesn't allow the second jet to open properly.

Kerb side autos on VZi is a VWDRC member and also sells DRLA's and parts.

Worn butterfly spindles can be a big problem and can let in excess air which will make idle mixtures harder to adjust. check that there isnt excessive movement around these.
