any ideas where I can get some of these for a '69 left hooker?

Also - I have noticed a few people have rebuilt these, any tips or advice?

My switch, will not hold itself on when indicating left and also, the self cancelling mechansim seems to work the wrong way round, i.e.

I indicate right, no probs, when I turn the steering wheel to the right it cancels the switch.

any help would be appreciated.

If you cant find a replacement then get a scrap one for spares, rebuilt a couple of 72 ones recently, really depends on whether the parts are worn or broken inside - theres quite a lot going on in there. I have some pics in the tech section showing it in bits. I may be able to take some more pics of how the cancelling works later.

Hiya buddy,

Yeah, I'm with Loxy.

These switches cost a small fortune to buy in the aftermarket. So I went around to a few VW shows and swaps and found old switches for my 70 for pretty cheap. Got about five or six of 'em. Then I sat down and pulled my original apart. Then I pulled a couple of the newly purchased switches apart. Just from doing that I was able to determine what my problem was (a sprung spring) and repair it. I also did some resoldering of contacts. Gotta be careful with that but it is do-able. As a result I wound up with what is basically a brand new OEM switch for a fraction of what the aftermarket knock-off costs.

The cancelling function also involves the cam on the steering wheel underside. You'll have to look that over and make sure that the cam is installed correctly and in good shape. Then too, the clearance between the steering wheel and the turn signal unit can affect the cancelling function.
