hello all! finally after 3 months of owning my van ive got round to a little service! am going to change the flexi fuel pipes but in doing so ive found a few rather worrying things.firstly the carb has two short bits of fuel hose just pushed onto tubes on carb with a small bolt screwed into the end to cap it off.am not sure what these are and am not happy with this metod of blocking them off. thought if these need blocking off i can use fuel line clamps and dowel so as they are not just pushed on.the pictures below will explain this better than i can! secondly on the inlet manifold just below the carb there is a pipe coming up at an angle which has a piece of rubber tube just pushed in the end and a srcrew in the end.again a crap method of blocking it off,if it does need blocking off? not sure what this pipe is actually for!.and finally the inlet manifold is the 3 piece affair.there is a bit of cracking in the rubber seals joining the pieces together.is this yet another fire risk or are they going to let more air in if they start leaking?

thanks for looking!

I wouldn't say a fire hazard as the small pipe and screw are to block of a vacuum inlet, not much chance of fuel getting out -
and it is quite common to see it done this way. You might find a better cap to block them off.

The manifold seals again at worst will just cause a vacuum leak and uneven idle or running.

OK the inlet manifold boots need replacing you'll have excess air and starting issues plus as you said a feint possibility of vapour in the engine bay not good.. the pipe is the brake servo take off, so have you a servo fitted if so re-instate it, other wise cap it more securely a solder plug (though the bore is quite large) or copper line sealed properly or get a spare inlet manifold (there cheap second hand especially since theres a big drive to dual carb set ups lots of them about) from on here (67 Bay...Steve getting shot of a lot of stuff)

the carb lines plugged are vac advance and retard

the one to the left is the advance which should connect with 3.5 mm hose to the can rounded side on your dizzy

on the rear or right in front of you is a 4.5mm fitting to the retard on the dizzy flat side of the can

now what dizzy are you running if a vac then wheres the advance / retard from?

I suspect you have a 009 or copy or summit along those lines....

Thinks thats the lot covered

many thanks guys.thats made me much happier! dont have the disc on dizzy so im presuming i have a 009 or something similar,in which case ill just block them off using fuel hose, clips and dowel. am going to move the fuel filter to the gearbox area. dont have a servo as its a 69, so im presuming it has a later inlet manifold rather than the early one piece. thanks again for all your help.steve.

While we're on the subject of filters; where is best to position them - outside the engine bay under the tank?

Anywhere handy away from the heat and electrics.... somewhere like steve has said by the gearbox...but then everybodies engine bay has its own layout so just use abit of common sense... personally if I'm using a see through I like it to be prominent

I've put mine over the gearbox.

I'm a skinny bugger, so it doesn't take long for me to crawl under my van to check the filter if needs be. I've never had a fuel blockage in the filter (or anywhere else) of either of my cars yet.

made a start yesterday, have replaced all engine bay pipes using the correct clips.and found some old oil cooler pipe in the garage that will nicely fit over servo take off to block it off.

all sorted now.fuel filter on top of gearbox, managed to get what the bloke in the garage described as diesel cap offs to block the vacumes off.all done with only a small dowsing of petrol in my right eye! all in all a good weekend! cheers guys for all the help.
