My 1970 Westy has the insulation missing above the engine.

Would it be ok to fit mdf or ply up there and finish it off with some nice perforated stainless steel or is it a special type of material? Does anyone sell kits?

I have that Rackham's engine board. Technically it is for a late bay, but it will fit. Mine required a bit of modification to get round some wiring if I remember correctly. The holes are useful if you plan to fit an automatic fire extinguisher.

I used foil-faced pyrofoam, cut to a cardboard template that I made from the bus.

Fire retardant, heat-resistant, sound insulating, and the foil should reflect heat back into the engine bay.

That's the theory, anyway

The *only* downside I could see is that it's open-cell foam (as it needs to be for effective noise reduction), so getting it wet wouldn't be so good because it would retain water.

Mines (71 crossover) got this perforated steel one with one inch fibre glass (plastic wrapped) in the gap above.
