today.. new day new things to die!

the engine has never turned over very fast but even with crappy drla carbs it would fire..

its been turning over slower and slower almost like the battery is dying, lights are bright though and am actually using 2 batteries a new one (halfwits 440 cold crank amps) and a fullt charged battery from our laguna, plenty of cranking power and that

yet its barely turning.. so is it dying, if so whats best way forward, gsf do 2 starters for the beetle engine, a cheap (i assume recon) one a bosch one. or can i use a higher torque one on the engine..

engine is a t1 (2027cc 160 psi compression) connected to a 091 gearbox with a t1 bell housing..

most likely but check earth first, best test put jump lead dirrect to engine.

As 67 panel says - check the earth.
Had similar on mine, convinced it was the battery - got a new one.
Took the starter out (removed engine first) and the copper bush that the starter engages into was cracked and broken. I am sure this was also causing the starter to 'jam' and therefore turn really slowly.
That needed doing anyway, but few days later, same thing.

Turned out that the clean looking main earth strap from the battery to the body was actually buggered - seemed to be corroded deep within the crimping at the end - but looked ok from the outside. New cable, problem totally gone!

engine is brand new inc the case, the bell housing is refurbed by a pro so no reason to doubt that..

good point ont the earth ill try the coeection to the engine and see if that changes anything.. cheers.

it may need a higher torq starter on an engine that size and with that compression.....it doesn't hurt to add another earth anyway [well afaik], the starter bush did catch me out...it does give the impression of a duff battery or starter......

ok that helped a little. it was a bad earth on the battery.. but still not running that fast. ill go get a new one tomorrow.. lets see if thats sorted it.
