lee, that vent is a safety measure incase your gas tanks leak, gas is heavier than air and will sink, i would assume its there to allow venting incase of a gas leak. Im not sure if its been added by the PO or if its a standard westy item. If your storing your cylinders there its probably a good idea to keep it.

Johnny's right - but I haven't seen such a big vent before; after all, it's to release gas molecules and not something much larger!!! I'd keep the vent but maybe use a finer mesh to help keep the bugs and draughts out!

;)

I've just fitted my devon cooker to my van, and the air vent is at the bottom back of the cooker. Maybe you could edit the cabinet rather than the body work. Which ever is the lesser of the 2 evils!

Where abouts in staffordshire are you?

hi, im in newcastle ,you in a owners club? Im in sas club meet at the darleston in stone .you should come along?

I work on a caravan park and all caravans are required by law to have floor vents where there is a gas installation as LPG is heavier that air and will sink to the floor. As has been suggested above I would find a finer mesh to stop creepy crawlies from getting in the back way but above all, keep that vent it may save your life one day.

Is there actually a vent to the outside of the van as that looks to be a solid cargo floor underneath that vent?

If thats the case you want to fit a smaller finer vent to the open air....as has been said before gas falls to the floor and slowly climbs as it leaks from the bottle....you can actually fill buckets and pour it out in an emergency (common on boats)....

well spotted, i just noticed it :? kinda weird to have the vent in the floor with no release for the gas?

are you lifting the flooring to get a look at the cargo floor?

No i am fitting the interior into a micro bus, as the first post says time to hack the floor,so would an hole about an inch across do with some fine mesh like a tea strainer do? cheers lee

personally I would fit a louvred vent facing the rear so the road crud doesnt fill it as quick.....

bigger than an inch....

possible several small holes within the footprint of the louvre, mesh sandwiched between floor and louvre....

just dont forget to seal the metalwork from the elements...

No it would need to be a lot bigger to be of any real use. The size of that hole was chosen for a reason. The minimum size I have seen in a caravan is around 3X2 inches and they use many of them.
