So its arrived ! last night on a trailer

71 Panel Ex South Africa

Got a few oddities , but its here and its mine !

So today the work begins to get her ready for MOT and uk registration , So will asking lots of questions soon !

Only needs Ball Joint/s Track rod end, brake hoses , jiggly locks , side lights (none), main lights , full beam ( all running off internal light switch) hazard lights , rear lights ,washer pump , thens theres fuel line many many engine bits , oh and the "adjustable steering column , which seems to be both height and reach adjustable !! oh and twin ignitions ?! one dash mounted , one steering column ,and no doubt lots of things i don't know about yet !!!!

Hi Grazy / Stinkbomber

Yeah finally got to a point i could just about afford one !, wanted a panel , so it could double up as a works van - thats my excuse anyway !

Torsion arm off yesterday , scissor splitter not big enough , down to halfords (closest) buy a forked one, worked but broke it trying to get it apart , then no 8mm hex key (grub screw) 6 yes 7 yes 10 yes 8 No back to halfords ! but hey .
Had my local garage press the new ball joint in today so will reassemble tomorrow .

Two new track rod ends in today , slow process lots of wd40 and hammer tapping couple of turns then wd tap tap tap, but got there in the end . another 1 off the list !

Tomorrow torsion arm back in and all going well replace steering coupling .

Spoke to Simon at buttys who's sending me out something rather better than this ..

All going well at the moment no great dramas , but then its still early days !

Trying not to think about the electrics till i get the mechanical bits done ! but they will be fun !!

Chico

Replaced torsion arm today with new ball joint

Also replaced both stabiliser bar rubbers and clips which is a bit of a pain .

disc and calliper back on , replaced both front Flexi brake hoses

Bled brakes all good till i noticed the drips coming from the rear brake pressure regulator :( Posted a question in technical about it if anyone has any ideas ?

Nice bus! Love a good panel van. Good to see you cracking on (no idea with the brakes issue sorry)

Few more bits done on the van, getting closer to MOT ready !

Brake issue resolved with a replacement regulator .

New steering coupling as old was cracked and starting to tare

New hand brake cable as old was seized and not working

New rear shoes whilst i was there

Time to start electrics ..

Washers first, new bottle and pump but didn't like the switch that came in the kit so ..

Half an hour with the very helpful how to guide from Doris and hey "presto"

Thank you very much Doris .

Hazards rewired to a permanent live rather than ignition live !

Still to do
side lights headlights , full beam (all sorts of weird things going on with them)
rear lights
Drivers window ( doesn't wind up/down , have to jiggle the glass back and forward)
All door locks need a tickle , passenger doesn't open from outside

so electrics time

time to change to an mph from kph

spagetti junction comes to mind

going to swap all the dash bulbs out at same time to something a little brighter, aftermarket light switch has been a nightmare , but got there in the end ,

Door lock ( trigger opening part) is still an issue but has been "wagged" up with springs

Relay changed to sort out indicators

Rear Lenses to swap ( red to amber ) tighten a few bolts here and there and should be mot ready !!
Obviously still loads to do , but need the mot to get registered and number plates !!

Getting close , getting excited !

daily mantra " One day i'll drive it " !!

Nearly there my old Mucka, keep on it. One day I may even pop round to assist....

Storming through the work on that! The wiring is a pain in the arse but after about 3 months of staring at the bentley wiring diagrams I'm starting to get an idea of what's what... That aftermarket light switch looks a total nightmare though!!

Thanks Guys

been a while since last post ( been busy see) So apologies but this is a long post to catch up , and theres limited pictures as well ( i know ! ) must start taking more photos !

Light switch is the bain ( I'm blaming the light switch for things but its probably something else) a new/ original one i will be getting! just so i can wire it without guess work and rule it out if nothing else !!!

Wiring/ electrics have become are becoming a little clearer thanks to Paul ( ill come back to that )

but yeah its getting there

So thought i was there , had done all on the MOT Failure list and some more just as it was needed easier to do at the time .
Mot was booked , checked everything all good ! .

Dropped it down off the axle stands , started it up for the first time in a two weeks, didn't want to run ( tick over ) kept revving and then sparks smoke oohhh boll…! generator ( dynamo ) sparking smoking and looking very unhappy !!! as was I .
My local garage picked it up the next morning ( MOT Day) as i was desperate to get the Mot and get the V55/5 sent off and the insurance company ( through adrian Flux) had only given me 60 days to get it uk registered and i was working 5 days a week ( unusual for me !) so was running out of time .
So my local garage who are great and i give lots of work to through my main job ( all there cars go through there ) are not Aircooled "specialist" so there was a bit of a learning curve , but were doing me a favour and fitting mine in between other jobs .
Was hoping the dynamo was repairable , but was " possible but not ideal" and i didn't want to spend the cash repairing something thats condition was questionable .

So Just Kampers Alternator conversion kit was purchased ( 55amp as that was the only one in stock , and i was very impatient ! ) but think it should be ok . although "KIT" is a bit of a leap , not supplied in the kit carb spacer ( ok they don't know what carb/s you have ) nuts bolts instructions any shims gaskets etc , however JK are very local and always really helpful when you go there great bunch of people full of advise , but if you order online you might not realise so check whats included .

Garage fitted it all up for me and gave me an MOT ( although wouldnt give the van back until it had "actually" passed an mot! . But that let me get the V55/5 sent off and sorted .

Needed another ball joint , electrical work ( alternator still runs though the regulator ? not sure there not just using it as a junction box ) but all seems to work , which was the brief i gave them
" get me an mot and running , ill sort the rest out later " which is exactly what they done so no complaints .
they spent some time getting it to run/ tick over and its still not quite right , but drivable theres hesitation / lag etc . but starts pretty much first time ! How cool is that !

So sent off v55/5 and all the relevant paperwork on a wednesday ( 1st class special delivery, better safe than sorry )
and received a full V5 back on the following Wednesday no questions no vehicle check how happy was i !!!

Ordered Plates from Framptons

Arranged with garage to collect the van ( all ticking over nicely , and they done the front brake pipes between flexi's and callipers ball joint and wheel bearing ) on the following thursday .

Plates finally!!! arrived on the thursday afternoon ( were promised monday or tuesday ) but just in time so i was all happy !

So Thursday !! 1st October 2015 . First time i drive my van more than 100m ( even though id owned it for 2 months !)

Garage stuck the rear plate on for me , couldn't decide what i wanted to do with front plate , so have decided will make up some brackets for the front bumper .

And then to drive it !!!

So I have to admit here that i was .. well .. shitting my self .. my stomach was in knots , i was sweating , and in the 4 mile journey ( down country lanes ) i was both excited ecstatic nervous scared smiling laughing thinking **** what have i done ! the daily mantra of "One Day ill Drive It " was today ! and i wasn't ready for it ! but it was everything i hoped it would be !

Id got it home , it was registered Mot'd Insured and MINE ! it was all a bit overwhelming to be honest , and had been a very long time coming / looking / getting the money together , etc . But i was happy ! ( that scared nervous knot in your throat kind of happy ) and i was all a bit a sea .

So a hour later id calmed down enough to venture to the petrol garage and half fill the tank , then a little detour about 40 miles! round the houses , and it hadn't broken down blown up caught fire ( surely somethings wrong ! ) and i was breathing a little easier .

So Friday i was invited down by Robbo ( who started all this nonsense of old VW's) but he lives down the A3 and round the M25 from me ! this meant main roads not just country lanes , Nervous was not the word and honestly i didn't think i was going to make it Flux Rescue was on speed dial ! but…. i got there ( hills were a struggle) and on time ( which although not a first is very rare !)

and then the next day i got all the way home ! , hang on ! it gets me from a to b without breaking down and a massive smile on my face ! do people know about this ! it can be reliable and fun !! WTF

So saturday arrived home with the intention of doing a little more work ( really stiff accelerator pedal) but went and seen my dad , then my sister , then a little drive about ! a few waves from people which is nice ! and done bugger all , but smiled drove and had fun

Surely Thats what its all about !!

Theres loads to do loads thats annoy me loads thats not right , but I'm smiling and having fun , the rest ill get back to !!!

Now now Chico, you can't blame me.

And anyway, if you hadn't gone VW, you would have probably reverted back to the Ford brand which is not advisable.

When I was forced into driving a Sierra, I had to join the owners club forum to get info on replacing the head gasket and there was a bloke on the forums named "F#cking C#nt".

I rest my case.

Thanks guys

Now Robbo , you are the owner of several Fast Ford magazines! (well at least one anyway )

So few more bits , wasn't really happy with my fuel lines looked ok , just one of those things that bothered me as
i didn't know the history of them .

So after a few weeks looking about i decided to go with the Aircooled Works System, bio ethanol lines 25 year life rather than the cheaper R9 ones . and fitted there fuel cut off solenoid as both a stop em stealing it device , but also a just in case at least you can shut the fuel off .
And the kunifer hard line round the manifolds.

Kit was great, full instructions with some pictures and gives me piece of mind

All went swimmingly with time to spare ( rare) so rather than tempt fate i went for an easy one after that
and added some silent coat to the front doors and front panel, as I've had the panels off waxoyl-ed in the bottom of doors and the bottom of the front panel behind the pedals/totem etc after scrapping out 40 years of gunk !

Looks a bit like a space ship with all the silver , but does seem to have made a difference , still got the rear to do.

But a few more bits off the ever increasing list !

Still riding that emotional roller coaster when I take mine out too! I'm a mess every time I get home safely... Although the hot oil fumes could be partly responsible for that too.
Looks like you're doing some great work! - A load of jobs that are on my to-do list as well: Washers, fuel lines, silent coat.

Are you going to be heading up to the Slough Swapmeet on Nov 1st?

just spent two hours typing up an update and then it disappeared when i clicked preview AAGGGHHHH !!!

Anyways i shall start again ….
bit by bit so i don't lose everything again!!!

So

What a year , just passed second mot , Whoop whoop

so to recap for nostalgia , and so i can remember the journey .

this picture from the tracker sums up my first year perfectly i think

So after my initial giddy excitement , the realisation of how many things were wrong , started to kick in .

I knew a lot of what was wrong , but not all . but then if it was perfect , i wouldn't have been able to afford it, and working on it is still 50% of the fun and the reason i bought it .

Light for late night working
