Hello again everyone!

Hope you've all had a lovely day :)

I've been looking about for something to help with the really sloppy gear changes on my bus 8) (oh its great saying 'my bus' haha!)

Just wondering if this is what I need?? ....

http://www.limebug.net/product/view/2092/cb-shift-coupler-rhino-super-coupler-fits-type-1-2-3-from-65" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

And while I'm at it can anyone recommend a good quick shift? This any good?....

http://www.limebug.net/product/view/555/quick-gear-shift-kit-t1-beetle" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Any help would be fabulous!

Thanks!

Lainey :)

(I hope you don't mind me asking all these questions, I learn quickly though!)

Lainey the first link you posted will probably improve things as will replacing the front bush. I changed just the front one on mine and the difference was really noticeable

that quick shift looks plastic to me, i would get an ally one ;

they work well if you change the rear linkage coupling.
Im running an empi trigger jobby and cant knock it.Was already on my bus when I bought it.You wont need the above with that though.

also beware some of the rear couplings are total crap quality, I ended up using the new urethane bushes in the old cage as the new one wouldnt fit and looked so poop
:D

Thanks guys :)

I'm just a bit confused though

Do I need both if these....

Or just this...

Thank youuu!!

Lainey :D

In the first instance, the alloy quick shift plate from Machine7 - it will remove a lot of the movement but the slop will still be there. It's what I've done and it helps enormously.

Following on from that, change the front plastic bush (the first lnk) and ideally, the coupling that joins the linkage rod to the selector on the gearbox (both a bit of a pain and underneath, grubby, etc). That's my next job and should have the shift back to factory...

Hope that helps...

Great advice from Jimbly and once you have done all the above and it is as good as it can get with the standard equipment get yourself a Gene Berg shifter - my most favorite aftermarket bit of kit.

Made the biggest difference to driving the bus. Even with all new shift rods, bushes and linkages.
Drives like a normal vehicle now.

They arnt cheap or easy to obtain but worth their weight in gold in my humble opinion.

See, I like that a lot.

Was always a fan of the EMPI trigger type but am swinging now... Is that a lock on the base? Lock in gear or neutral or either?

There is also a little plastic ball in the nose of the box that is a coupling bush. If this is worn, your shift will not improve no matter what you try and do. There is a replacement metal bush available for about 15 quid.
It will be a box out job to fit but the difference is amazing. Couple this with a new front bush and new rubbers in the old cage and I doubt you will fell the need to go to a more expensive lever.
I also fitted an alloy quick shift that helped considerably.

In terms of improvement for bucks, the alloy quick shift plate takes some beating. I picked one up from Busfest last year for a fiver, and it made a huge difference. OK, it's not quite in the Gene Berg league, I grant you. :D

If you replace the rear shift coupling and are thinking of buying this cage with the urethrane bushes remember to keep the original cage but put the urethrane bushes in it.

One thing to be aware of, just because some items are labelled as performance items doesn't nessecarily mean they are any good. Generally it's the orgiinal equipment that are the better items and there are very few companies out there that have improved on quality/function.

By the way there are also two bushes on the actual shift rod (engine and gearbox out job though) but porridge stirring is mainly affected by the cage, front shift bush or a badly alligned gearshift. Just to echo what others have said if you change the items in this order you should see a gradual improvment.

For a massive improvment the gear shifter itself could also be changed but this only really shortens the shift gate.

Can I also recommend a 'Butty' front throttle linkage to compliment a smoother gear change.

Nice Westfalia ;)

LaineyW, How did you get on ? - I'm about to go down the same route - do you have any hints - I got these parts to fit - I guess there the same ones you fitted..?

Did you just undo the coupler at the gearbox end and everything "made sense"

Many thanks for any tips

Matthew
