Also my fav wheel. Not seen a set on a bay before. Even my mrs said she liked this wheel I then instantly knew it would be ones of the most expensive you could buy

Lots on splittys but I guess that's because splitty owners are the only ones that can afford them!

They look nice in white.

Not that expensive i thought.....

Anyway, way back in the Samba archives, here's a little history behind the wheel, seems the euro DSR's are a "copy" of the original wheel found by Dave:

Anyway, here is what he said back in 2006.....

I also happen to know how Randee acquired the rights to produce that wheel... you see, it was ME that found that wheel in Dave Deal's basement, pestered and cajoled him until he and I dragged it out of hibernation, I cleaned it up (it had been sitting for close to, if not over, 30 years), took the photo for VW Trends, (along with some NOS in-the-box EMPI radios that Louie and Nancy Cerutti had @ OVW Company) and the next thing you know, the wheels are being made in Europe..Dave wasn't happy about someone "cloning" his design, without even asking for permission, and he knew that trying to fight them from across the Atlantic Ocean, was going to be an expensive study in futility...I wasn't real happy, because of my insistence that Dave drag that wheel out so I could clean it up and photograph it for the magazine, I felt somewhat responsible for my friend being "taken advantage of" by someone that my friend would have no viable recourse for recovery, or compensation.
Randee, on the other hand, had told me since he saw the photo I took back in 2001, that he wanted to reproduce that wheel. I told Randee I'd be happy to help, AS LONG AS DAVE DEAL WAS HAPPY WITH IT. (Dave's my friend; I didn't want to feel responsible for him getting shafted again).
When Randee called me some time ago, and told me to check my e-mail, and there, non-photoshopped, was a photo of Randee, Dave Deal, and the Deal wheel between them, I know that Randee was doing it the RIGHT way, and he wasn't going to have to listen to me bitch and complain about him "cloning" Dave's wheel, without his blessing. When Randee told me he had the original wheel in his posession, I knew it was going to be a "go" situation.
Haven't seen the wheels yet, but I'm sure they'll be "Randee quality", so no worries there.
I also remember when there was some questions on the 'net, about Randee's "Randar" wheels, if they had been safety tested. I told Randee I'd be happy to say something about the "Randars" in the magazine, but ONLY if he could furnish irrefutable proof, that the wheel had been safety tested. (didn't want the magazine involved in anything that could add their name to a lawsuit, should the occasion ever arise).. Next thing you know, I have copies of the side impact test, burst test, and every other type of test you can do to a wheel, from a place called GOAL Engineering, in Long Beach, CA, who were an authorized D.O.T. testing facility, and the "Randar" had passed every criteria with flying colors

There is plenty of stuff on the RDW Vs DSR on the Samba's archives......

Cheers,

Alistair

You have to speak to him direct and he is terrible (read shocking!) to get back to you. The best bet is to catch him at Volksworld ;) my friend had a set made for him and i was involved in the arrangement. He is now really only doing them for buses/people he wants not everyone (they are made for a person not in general) and if you think £1300 is expensive for RDWs brace yourself for DSRs  ******* nice wheels tho and are in the top 2 fav wheels of mine 8)

Easy has it right the bloke chooses who he wants to sell wheels to but you customise them to your width offsets etc, they also can take a year or two to arrive. I have a mate that bought a set and had sold the vehicle he intended them to goon before they even arrived! They are always upstairs at the volksworld show in the swap meet section.

yeah there was a huge row, lawyers threatened etc about these wheels. they look particularly good on a bug
