Originally posted on the JK forum...

Have used a JK cover since early October. I've had the van out now and again and put the cover back when I've got home.

The other day I was shocked to see the paintwork was a mass of raised spots - in places I knew it had been perfect.

I've picked at them and the paint has blistered leaving a rusty mark underneath.

Should I do away with the cover and just do what I'd always done and clean the van in the spring?

Anyone got any ideas?!!

Maybe I should have posted here first but anyway the above has not brought any suggestions apart from 'blame the paint prep'. This could be right but the problem is to be found both on original paintwork as well as recent new panels. The end result is the cover is now in a heap on the grass, I'm not buying from JK (dismissive tone in a reply from JK!) and I'll be looking at a respray earlier than I intended.

i had the same problem, when i phoned them up all i got was "were not paying for a respray"
they should look into it as they are ruining buses, it aint cheap to respray a bus, i binned mine
sorry to hear that mike... :x

I'll be ditching mine once I get my roof on.
It caused spots on my paint, and places where it has rubbed, it has caused stains on the paint.
Plus, they ain't very waterproof - not impressed after only 10 months of use!

Not sure what I'll do once I chuck it - would love one of those 'portable' garages, but the bus size one is nearly £500

Cheers guys - sorry to hear you've had the same problem but then again also glad I'm not the only one!

Adding insult to injury was the attitude of JK in his reply - I'll be giving his company a miss as now this forum is looking so good I'll probably make fewer visits to his forum too.

As for what to do instead - I have thought of some kind of carport structure, letting air through but keeping leaves etc off.

your better off spending a day giving it a good wash, taking it for a spin to dry it out and coating it with a good wax.
any bird poo etc just wipe off and re treat with wax
youve seen my bus mike, its spent the last nine years outside in all weathers

I'm glad I ain't the only one that isn't happy with JK nearly every order i made with them has been crap ground sheet pegs don't go through the holes my awning leaks and the cab hamock is **** it don't fit right and then you get some lame excuse on the phone.
Don't want to start slating them on here but not pleased with them and will stay well clear now. :(

Live and learn!

Have to say I'd have said it was a recent respray! I'll be getting the sponge out more frequently for sure.

I hope I have recently solved one of the problems - the neighbours' Elder tree always made autumns awful but since he defaulted on the mortgage I've taken some drastic action on the tree and with luck it won't be bothering me again!

I am still waiting for my JK cover which i ordered 3 weeks ago, after asking when the cover would arrive i got bluntly told they would let me know when it arrived. When they did arrive i expected they would dispatch one to me as stated in my original order, but no! they had all been flogged after i'd been told to re-order the item. After hearing these problems i'm thinking the cover is a waste of money. Perhaps i should find another way of stopping my bus getting rustier than it already is.

I recall reading alot about this last year on JK, and it does seem to be quite a big problem. Have used mine though for the last 2 years without any problems, so far.

There was a good post on covers recently, which explained that to dry out a 'breathable' material needs an energy source, an item of clothing uses body heat, so these covers rely on regular dry windy days to dry out .. if they dont come then its going to hold trapped moisture.
They are sold on being a winter solution, but they arent, and I think they will cause problems if relied upon, as yours has shown.

There has been an air of contempt recently by 'JK' in many posts, but it must be remembered that he is the webmaster in his employment by them, and not a sales team member, so his attitude may not be entirely representative of them, if that makes sense?

I wanted to comment on that thread about the covers, but some days I feel Im constantly being arguementative, and think I should refrain!! ;)

clem i know what you mean, if i hadnt met mike in person and know that he is a top bloke i wouldnt have posted, thats why i like it on this forum as i can post something without getting slated.

after my jk cover palarver i havent used them, like i said id just wash the bus reguarly, it used to be parked under lime trees and that stuffs nasty but nothing a good wash and polish couldnt sort.
maybe its easier for me as i spent nearly ten years in paint refinishing.
im so glad i finally got a garage!

i have taken my cover off today. got a party to go to tommorrow woo hoo. i have found a few micro blisters on my roof which was painted a few years ago before i had the joy of ownership.
I do work in a bodyshop as a panel beater and i do know a few things about paint and fresh paint (upto six months old) needs to breath to otherwise the solvents will lift and moister will form under the paint. i don't think these cover's are very suitable for that.
i have let a friend know who has a very mint westy (lovely bus) i'll c wot he says when he takes a look.

Anyone selling their JK cover then.

I need one for when I start work on the front beam. :D

Any going cheap?

your better off getting a cheap cover from argos, ive used them before ant they are good value, normally around a tenner
:)

Mine is sitting around wasting space - but not sure I should sell the thing! I may have an answer to the problem in that my van is parked on the east side of a fence, with the garage door to the north. Hence the wind struggles to ventilate the area, though I have made slots at the bottom of the fence to let some air through. Could just a general muggy atmosphere have caused the problem?

Good news is that I now have more space as my daughter has moved away so can park the van in a better position.
