its got an 8 dowel crank fitted  .
Is this normal?

I recently aquired an AE 1600cc Single port engine that came out of a 70 van.
Having a quick flick through me Haynes  it sais its a 1971-74 1600cc Twinport.
Fair enough, it looks like it was converted to SP to be used in the Van at some point in its life.
Stripped the engine this afternoon to see what parts im going to need for a rebuild and spotted its an 8 dowel crank. Is this normal?
It does have a VW stamp on it.
Has a 200mm clutch on it still (same as my van).
Only ever seen 4 except on race engines.

no not standard but better so good for you, do you think it's a standard crank?
that means it should be a dual relief case from memory - also better..

you sure it's not a 1776?what size are the pistons?

There is a blocked hole next to the oil pump now you come to mention it :? .
85.5mm pistons.

Keep the questions comming, you may be onto something  .
Does look pretty standard in there though.
Also it has a 3 rivet cam, theyre pre 71 arent they?

If that's a chromo crank then it will be the worlds strongest 1600 sp  No not stock but as said all the better for you. Is it a stock cam? Engle cams use the early 3 rivet style.

Not sure, should there be anything stamped (names or numbers) on the cam or crank?

An aftermarket cam will have the grind number eg w100, fk8, 86c etc on the face that joins the oil pump.
