just a thought i had the other day, everybody looks for the earliest EB has anybody looked for the last ones? how can we find out where our vans are in the final line up? I have emailed the vw museum to see if they know from our chassis numbers who are the final few, still waiting to hear back. my chassis number ends 261,557 and was made in july 1971 how many more vans were made in the last 2 weeks of production? I have read somewhere it isn't the 300,000 that most books state, who has a chassis number later than mine but not a 1972 model (august 1971 onwards)

Early bays were made up until July 1972 so a full year later, yes I know they are crossovers but they are still earlybays.

Crossovers are far superior... better rear cooling, better rear visibility at night, fancier arches, not so far to reach between wheel nuts, brakes... but yet so much better built than latebays with their hairgrip engine lid hinges and Irn Bru bumpers... ahhhhh, all hail the crossover! ;)

Hey I've got nothing against crossovers I used to have one, in actual fact they are a rare breed as a one year only. I was just wondering who has a van made in the 2 week slot after mine and the same model as mine as in small back lights, removable valance, fat back arches and flat front ones etc etc.

Just joshin... :msn4:
Crossover not that rare as you think ;)

thank you hogseye for your post, been wondering why the rear arches on my van dont fit, mine must be a late one with the fat rear arches ( which i cut out by the way of which had already been replaced :D ) to replace with the flat lipped style. the van is on a k plate with small rear lights and removable rear valance, will check the chassis number and update asap

A 71 doesn't have flat rear arches, it has flared ones and there's no difference from 71 on.
If you've got flared rear arches and a removable valance it's a 71 MY built between August 70 and July 71.

A little curve ball to add - for the 71 model year there are 2 types of rear arches - early 71s - Aug 1970 to around Jan / Feb 1971 have a flared arch with a rounded rolled lip. After that they changed to late bay rear arches with the flat lipped flare. (See Radish's Westy - early rounded flare OG arches - Sep 70 I think. Mine is an April 71 and has late bay rear arches (OG unwelded)

Mines Feb 71 and has the later flat lipped flare and are the ones on the Bus from new...all OG
interesting the little differences from one month of manufacture to the next.
My mates July 71 USA import westy even has a plug in point in the engine bay for diagnostics...mine doesn't !
