i fitted my new kit from Butty on monday and i have a question........

it was really easy to fit but i have noticed that there is a little play/give in the linkage before the cable pulls on the carb linkage :? is this correct :?:
i therefore went back under the van to check by pulling the linkage and it travels between 5-10mm before the cable moves.
does anyone else have this??
or is it that i have the new spring toooooooooooo taut??

what's your thoughts peeps??

What he said^^^ But don't forget to leave a little play to allow for heat expansion else your revs will go up at idle when the engine warms up.

yeah I undid the barrel bolt and got the missus to press the pedal to floor while I opened the linkage fully to make sure the cable did not put too much pressure on the carb and also to ensure the carb was fully open.

I get about 5-10mm of pedal movement downwards before cable pulls on the carb linkage.

I'd set it at the back with the pedal up and the carb closed. Those kits tend to make the pedal quite 'erect' so you'll still get full throttle as long as the angle out of the tinware is correct. You'd do well to pull the carb off through the throttle cable!

well where to start.............

breathe and relax!!!!!!

took van out for first drive over to gloucester with the kids with new throttle linkage and on the way back the throttle stayed on in what ever position i had the foot/revs and the spindle stayed put :? approaching a roundabout at 200yards went to slow down and the thing kept revving, all i could was dip the clutch and repeatedly stamp on the throttle to release it at 20-30 yards still doing 25mph and ready to hit the handbrake!

so my question is what the foook happened there then??

standard vw solex 34pict3 has been stripped and new gasket kit and new spindle bushes off ebay.
previously done 300miles before fitting this new kit without a problem.
today was really warm and when i got to gloucester i could only just hold the dipstick.
timing is spot on valve clearances done and spark plug colour is light grey/tan so all seemed ok.
never driven bus on a hot day before so is this normal to be hot??
all tinware present and correct van pulls right upto 50 no problem and will go more but running new lump in.

is this my problem slammed or will i need to take carb off and sort out spindle??
gave the kids a fright of their lives    :? :?  **** myself also

vw solex 34pict3 standard oilbath filter, thermostat and flaps present and correct, standard exhaust and exchangers.

ran van a couple weeks ago on a 50mile trip and could hold the dipstick no problem but the day was alot cooler(dont think that would effect outcome).

The only thing i can think of that could have caused throttle to not return fully is the small balljoint and pushrod for earlybays are very short and the joint may have slipped inside the new rubber floor gaitor . Ideally you need it to stick down whilst engines not running then undo the cable from the kit and see whats going on , not heard of this issue before . But it could be new rubber and balljoint issue.
Options are
1) Cut upper/opening of rubber off to allow joint to freely pass through.
2) Fit a 5mm bore washer thats bigger in diameter of the rubbers opening above the rubber .(can send you a rod with joints and washer fitted if it is the rubber and joint issue )

thanks for the swift reply simon.

shall be under the van this morning to check it all out and report back later with my findings.

If you're running it in it will get hot as everything is gonna be tight at the moment.

had a look this morning could not replicate the fault with the engine off so i took the bull by the horns and took the carb off and stripped the spindle shaft down and checked the new brass bushes and all seemed ok with no obvious clues so i blew it all out with compressed air and reinstated the carb and set the throttle cable with play as opposed to the first time of it being tight and responsive almost straight away then went for a 15mile drive and nothing,so dont know whether it was because it was too tight i don't know but it was alot cooler today.

so far so good, hopefully it will not happen again.

just like to say hat's off to butty on his response to this,he was very quick to give me advice and support with any luck it is sorted but i shall keep you updated what i find if anything.

Just about to fit the butty throttle kit and noticed your post regarding...

I've had something similar. My accelerator pedal dropped to the floor and didn't spring back. This happened when I had the bus parked up, so no recreating any scenes from the film "speed" for me.

When I looked underneath at the throttle linkage it was quite slack. Atfirst I thought the cable might have snapped, but after pulling it (behind the first piece of chassis rail?) for a bit the cable went back to the normal tension and the pedal popped back up. I couldn't see if the cable snagged on something but I could feel a rubber grommet on the cable behind the chassis section (maybe about 12 or 18 inches along from the start of the cable).

So, my question (before I fit the butty throttle kit) is has anyone else had this and what did they do to fix it? Don't fancy this happening if I'm on the road like sharky was.
