Not sure whether my van has had some work done on the electrics by the previous owner, but seems that the outside lights relay may have been changed [dimmer relay].

Can anyone help me out - the side lights work fine, no main beam though....
Have looked at the schematics for the year [69] but it seems that the relay has an additional red wire???? Already spent two hours trying to resolve the issue.

The relay has five terminals.
56 - black/white
56a - yellow
56b - brown/white
S - white
30 - red

If anyone knows the correct wiring sequence, that info would be much appreciated.

the red wire pin30 isnt on american spec vans they dont have a flash when you pull the indicator stalk
the pull back is only dim dip with the head lights on
hope this helps

By my reckoning 56b and S are swapped over. The S goes to the stalk and 56b goes to the high beam fuses or at least they do on a '68.

Fitted new relay and wired up as per schematic.
Double checked the wiring against the light switch, all ok.
Checked the wiring against the emergency flasher / hazard warning lights, all ok.

When on side lights, all ok.
When changing to main lights, left hand high beam is on.

Any info much appreciated.

Take it you mean the RH High beam isn't working, then look at it's associated fuse, is it clean and tight (looking is not enough) take it out clean up and refit. Has the bulb blown?

Both lights work correctly when on side lights.
When you pull the lighting switch to take you onto main lights.

The right mainbeam works fine.
The left mainbeam works fine BUT the highbeam also comes on.

Thanx
