Lubricating locking fuel cap mechanism

the locking mech of my fuel cap is getting very stiff what would be best to lubricate it without risk of contaminating the fuel, or is that not an issue?

Powdered Graphite. It is non sticky and does not dry out. Technically, it's what you should lubricate all locks with.

Spray silicon from halfords works well on locks, just dont use any thing stick like oil as your locks will gum up with dirt over time.
