bought a "stock 1600 exhaust" about a year ago to replace a stock item and it crippled the top end (1600 tp with twin ICTs) the outlet by the rear wheel was 3mm smaller on the new item, eventually found someone with original size and this fixed the problem. You're motor wants to breathe more than mine so would think you will be restricted with a stock exhaust, even more if you have one of the small ones that seem to be about.

(Tried removing the final bend altogether to remove restriction and found sound is too boomy at cruise, so chopped and turned it to give a single 45 degree deflection down with a scarfed end and have been running this ever since)

I think that there are very few speedos reading the correct value, even on brand new cars.

My Golf Plus runs 7 mph too fast at 80mph and its only 12 months old according to 2 different GPSs :? .

Try running a GPS and see what the difference is? are GPS readings more accurate? is this why the police aloow about max limit +10% when it comes to speed cameras?

Out of all of our cars, the van seems to be the most accurate we have! [depending on the accuracy of the sat nav that is] - running copilot on my phone, and the speedo is within 1mph everywhere! Standard wheels etc etc help.

I think theres definately something wrong somewhere as I've got a 1641 TP with single carb fittied with a VW Speed shop exhaust and it really goes, even running 185/65/15 (smaller rolling radius than stock 14's) it will pull 70mph all day if asked to and will hold the majority of that speed on hills(checked against a GPS as speedo overeads by about 10% due to wheel tyre combo)

Picking up my panel tomorrow with a 1776 and twin carbs so will be interested to see how that goes in comparison, current owner reckons it will pull 90mph but not sure how the speedo is reading.

A standard exhaust will definately restrict power and I would have thought a good quality performance exhaust (VW Speed Shop/Blue Bird/ CSP spring tio mind)would help it breath a lot easier.

Agree with Easy that the air filters arn't helping much, they look like they have seen better days, would be worth checking them and replacing as well, a good rolling road session would at least identify these areas but be prepared to spend a bit of money as RR's are costly if you want to play,

So Graham - what is the verdict on the panel - need to get a better time around the TG track next year!!

Angus

Too early to make too many comments as I've only driven it from Kenilworth to home which is about 30 miles but I can honestly say it pulls a lot lot better than my 1641 in Hank and the acceleration is very good, not sure about the top end end as it was absolutely p***ing it down when we collected him so wasn't pushing it too hard in a different bus

Are you going to Vanfest?, if not happy to meet up somewhere for you to have a go and see what you think

Hi Graham - nope, not getting to Vanfest - must try and actually get to some of these events next year!!
Be great to catch up and have a natter, and see the vans - not sure when I might be up in your area, but let us know if you head this way. Tessa's parents are in Northants -we go up there regularly. I may be at Santa Pod on Wednesday, drifting the 7 :D

...sorry to go a tad o/t!

GPS aint really that accurate as a lot of it is software calculations using predictions based on previous information recieved, speed calcs rely on the "Ephemeris data" transmitted in 3 x 6 second blocks every 30 seconds, sounds a lot but quite slow in time really, especially if your up and down the gears or speed, great if your on a long straight then you can see a very accurate reading in relation to your speedo.....

The timing arrived from GPS is very accurate indeed so as long as your in a constant speed in open (minimal trees buildings etc... I move too many of these that have been sited in the autum/winter then come spring/summer synch drops off funny how that tree the receiver was sited under has sprouted leaves) recieving the signal from 4 satellites your onto a winner....

remember you only have a possitioning accuracy of 10m as a consumer but surveyor grade GPS have an accuracy within 10mm

and before anyone says it ... it aint caculated on Doppler shift ... thats the likes of speed cameras ...

Thanks for the explanation Aaron, I was using my GPS to check speed on a steady run on a motorway so I guess it should have been about right

Somebody also said yesterday that they don't look like twin 40's.Hmmm
eBAYpICS278.jpg

They look like kadrons to me which i thought were all 40's but they are single barrel twin carbs unlike DRLA's and Webbers which are twin barrel twin carbs.
