well ive read the "bibles " and advice is conflicting though i can see the sense in all advice ,the question is>> 1st thing in cold morn , when u fire up your bus do you pull away asap or let it idle for awhile ? ta 4 opinions/advice

More importantly, do you pump the accelerator before starting to activate the auto choke. I'd be interested to hear a full start up sequence from someone.

well ive got twin dells fitted so i press pedal as i turn key to "catch" the ignition and once done leave it alone to "pick up" mine is lumpy at idle though, it could do with a spell on rolling road

yeah i ve got twin dells as well - pump the throttle a few times with the elec pump running before i turn the starter, then let it warm up enough to idle - usually a couple of minutes, and pull away - always take it easy anyway, cant afford any breakages

Quote from John Muir's Idiots Guide:

"When it starts, don't rev it up nervously. There's nothing worse to do! Just let it idle slowly a minute, then a little faster to warm it quicker but like a lamb, not a lion sort of thing. Figure half to three minutes to do the whole job right and you can contemplate your navel for the nonce, ir you can get out and look around the tyres or even read. But this is bread, brothers and sisters. Do this warm up thing and it will make your VW last a third longer, minimum." (Pp.36)

Pure poetry. :D

Great info guys. Good to know, but once again conflicting.
 I was just thinking that!

John Muir recommended disabling the choke and warming up the engine while you got your roll up toking nicely. Great for your engine, but not to good for you

Also he lived in California which is a tad warmer than here....

So I guess if you have a choke just drive it, if not warm it up.

On choked engines, I depress the pedal and release it slowly, then start with no pedal pressure, then as soon as its settled (put your seat belt on, turn on the radio etc) I drive.

On twin carbs, a couple of pedal pumps before firing the engine, then warm it up till it will idle with no assistance.

Same here. Sometimes takes a couple or three turns of the key, if very cold and/or damp, and has never let me down. Then savour the moment whilst the revs settle.

I've got twin solexes with auto chokes. One press of the pedal, start up and then another press of the pedal to get it off fast idle. Then l usually leave it for a few minuets and away I go.

Only problem with the auto chokes is when warm and you stop for gas or something, they kick back in and he drives like a bag of nails until they come off again.

i must assume that owners with a factory standard set up re carb and associated parts make for an easier cold start???, biggest prob i have is keeping the windscreen clear , despite having got the heat exchangers working rather well. 7am starts are proving something of a test of inginuity, and doubling up time estimated for whatever journey i"m doing.and of course the noise starting her up,letting it idle for a min or two really impresses the neighbours !cheers for all advice/opinions

Hi - have you tried anti-fog treatment? Used this on my bike visor and seemed to help, personally I've ICT's so start it up and wait for it to idle cleanly then pull away, sometimes in "tank commander" mode looking out a de-misted patch  but it usually clears enough once I've got out of my estate

Worst part of driving aircooled in cold weather is the need to drive fast to clear the screen, and not being able to drive fast because the screen is misted/frozen!

I remember as a child, in my Dads beetle in cold weather, him saying 'Will you lot stop breathing!'
