Just a quick question, I have recently painted my bay and it will be going in for an MOT soon, I have fitted new headlights etc so they will need to be adjusted. So am I better to leave the headlights without the rim to allow them to adjust it without damaging the paint taking it off? Or will it then fail for something relating to them?

Leave them off sounds like the sensible idea,

The trims won't be part I the mot, only important thing is that the lights work how they should.

That's it, but ask if they don't mind giving the headlights a quick fiddle during the test for a few quid, before you take it in... If they have a problem with doing that then it's a fair sign that they're going to be miserable buggers about other stuff too.

Took my beetle there last year, they were fine with sorting the alignment out for nothing. :) bloke that does the MOT's has been VW approved for 40 years I think.

It would only be a problem if there were sharp edges without the headlamp rims fitted.

There's no sharp edges that I'm aware off, I will put the head lamp rims in the glove box or something anyway and explain my reasoning for not fitting them.

For the MOT, the sharp edges have to be caused by corrosion or damage.

Sharp edges not due to corrosion/damage can't fail an MOT (although the vehicle may well be illegal to drive anyway).

As a result, a car shouldn't fail an MOT for having a 6ft spike sticking out from the front panel.

Body Condition - This part of the examination applies to all vehicles

Reason for rejection: A sharp edge or projection, caused by corrosion or damage, which renders the vehicle dangerous to other road users including pedestrians.
