is my 1970 bay supposed to have a headlamp flasher ? the indicator unit i recently fitted from justkampers only has a main beam switch, but does not flash the headlights with lights off or on sidelights. The MOT guy says it should have a flash facility and wont pass it !!........any ideas

Hi - mines a 71 and has two relays on the bottom of the fusebox, flashers and main beam - not sure of a 1970 - do you have a bentley manual to check handy?

No they don't have a flash on them it just switches between the two same as a beetle

i know mine's a late, but being american it doesn't have flash, if your headlight relay only has 4 wires (it may have 5 pins but one is a locating pin) then it isn't meant to flash, i've had 2 mot's now with no flash option and it's not required as far as i'm aware, you can convert a nonflash to a flash by getting a 5 pin relay and running a live to the 5th pin to give you the option.

Yep, mines a US bus and has never had flash. No probs with MOT in 6 years.

Sorry - re-read, yes - mine has a relay that switches to high/dipped beam. But doesn't flash on side lights or lights off - no probs on any mot

no flash on my 69 import either, its not needed for the MOT, tell the tester to read the regs, think i would start looking for somewhere else to do the mot.

What was his explanation for giving the initial fail ?

as i said, he was a nazi, so didnt really understand what he said

i mentioned the war....but i think i got away with it !

good stuff - glad it was resolved - and it's not so bad, my local MOT place knacked my gear shift trying to get it in reverse and off the brake test machine

My local lets me work the controls at they do the MOT in both the van and the Caterham to stop them cocking things up.
Usually I have to wait around 30 mins twiddling my thumbs after the MOT so they can register it on the system else it thinks the MOT has not been done correctly (some minimum time limit set VOSA).

Glad it is all sorted.

That's the "let's have a cuppa and talk about old motors" section of the test isn't it? Certainly is with my tip top local tester... :D

last year the tester wouldnt pass my 61 Land Rover cos it only had one wiper ( as built)......it took me a week to get a copy of an original handbook with a picture before he would pass it !!
