if you gaffer tape it Mr MOT man will definitely pull it off to see what nasties are hiding for sure, not sure about the CV oil leak. i would think this would be at least an advisory.
Changing ball joints boots is fiddly but easy enough to do, cv boots are a bit harder possibly needing a special tool?
A Geordie guy I worked with a few years ago said that when he had to replace rubber boots/gaiters that he cut the old ones off, bought new ones and cut them , both with a Stanly blade .Then instead of having to undo everything to get them on just glued them back together again using cycle puncture glue. Never tied it myself but in theory it should work and save a lot of hard work.
In the other hand, we had new ball joints pressed in complete with new rubbers, fitted everything and let it back onto its wheels and watched the new rubbers split, without turning a wheel :?
