As it says on the tin - hello all!
After owning watercooled VW's for more years than I can remember I finally went aircooled about 2 months ago. I have desperately wanted a van for ages and finally talked the wife around - and here it is (the van, not the wife!)
We found an early bay by luck - and this one has a reasonably interesting history. It's LHD from Germany and was shipped over here in 2005. In 2006, it was offered as 1st prize in a competiton run by The Daily Star. The lady who won it would rather have had the money than the van so she flogged it - to us!
We made it to VanFest and found out more interesting stuff. It's a Westy (and was built as such having checked all the id plates) but has a Helsinki interior in dark laminate (supposedly introduced 1973/4 - this is a 71 van) and a rear hinging roof lid. Either it has been modified at some point (I'm sure the roof has) - or could it be a German market only option?
Whatever, as you can see, I'm in at the deep end - this was the flywheel oil seal after having it 3 weeks. Didn't do the trick. Did it again the day before VanFest. Still drips, so I'm going to swallow my pride and let a garage guy look at it. Fed up of dropping vw engines on me foot (luckily I had steelies on - both times!)
Here's the back after fitting a badge and proper quality lenses. State of drive and tupperware courtesy leaky motor. Whatever - we love it. Would have said hi at VanFest itself, but was too busy buying stuff - but it's in the diary for next year!
