dear all

stupidly when i fitted a new front to my van (Had to due to rust) i forgot to get the riased
circle on the pannel cut out so i have a ealry bay front with a small raised section that i can only fit a late bay badge on which annoys me.

i have been told it will cost me £500 to get this cut /flattened and re sprayed and it could warp the panel

anyone got any better ideas and does the price seem reasonable ?

early bay badge with the centre section cut down so it fits over, Clarkson on here has done it pm him....

have seen it skimmed with filler to blend it out looks ok.....apparently it very hard to weld front panel there without distortion

As Araon I remember that being done... try Clarkson46.... but I thought it was the other Cornishman...speedwell68 aka Clarkson on Vzi

Sounds pricey to me, cut the bump out yourself and if you weld a steel plate behind the hole using tack welds all the way round, the panel will not distort, distortion only occurs with continuous welding, so if you place a tack, leave say, 20 secs then another and so on you should be fine, a skim of filler and a couple of hundred quid to a small local body shop and you should be there

Hope this helps if you decide to go this way.

Just got your PM.:D

Yeah, what we did was get the cheap plastic repro early symbol from JK. We then measured the radius of the bulge and marked it out on the inside of the symbol with a compass. Then using a sharp wood chisel we carved out the bulge. It is quite tedious and requires a lot of trial and error in fitting, but the result is good. We used this to stick it on...

It comes on a roll and is double sided, you need to cut it into small strips and stick them on to the inside of the symbol, all around the outside and all the way up and down the inside of the V & the W. Make sure you mark the exact place on the bus you need it to be, 4 witness marks every 90 degrees is ace, do it with a decent pencil or chalk. Then peel the backing off your sticky strips and stick it very firmly in place, you only get one shot at this and this stuff is very sticky. My symbol has been on there for nearly two years and hasn't budged, whatever the weather.:D This stuff is great for sticking on curtain rails too, it is how mine are done, except the sliding door one. They have been there two years too.:D

Hope you understood that.

Ive just done the same with my front badge. I used a plastic JK chrome look one.
I measured the inner diameter of the bulge and the outer diameter and I think it was 3mm deep.
I marked the back with a pair of dividers after I had blacked it with a marker pen.

I then removed the material with a hand linisher ( just like a power file) and put a small radius in the corner betwen the big and small diameter with the nose of the linisher.
I work in a sheet metal shop so I had the loan of one.

It doesnt look as good as I thought it would but in reality I am probably the only one who can tell unless you look close.

One point to note is that the bulge is 3mm deep but if you are using the little black clips they hold it off a millimeter so you really only need to cut out 2mm if you want it flush.
Mine has a slight gap underneath which I stuck down with some number plate fixing pads.
If you are still unsure I could take some photos.

Hope this helps.

Cheers. :D
