Hi everyone. Really glad i found this site, loads of good stuff on here! Heres my new (well old) 1970 tin top. Just got her registered for this summers camping trips. I sold my 67 split back in september for something a bit more practical. Found this one on thesamba, It came complete with pretty much all the original bits apart from the buddy seat. Bodyworks in great shape, just a few bits to do inside (it smells grotty and old) and the hook up to convert if poss.

PS. am i ok disconnecting the rad for the fridge underneath & associated pipes? I doubt its ever gonna work again and i dont want to lug it around.

hey,
welcome to the site nice looking van you've got there, it would look better with out the overriders  (you can sell them to me!) oonly joking they look gr8

Cool van,welcome to the forum.
Was it registered late in 1970? It looks more like a 1971 model year, which could have been made towards the end of 1970.

I've just got a 71 westy myself and was wondering what to do with the fridge? it would be nice to have it working and the hook up too.I've been advised by other forum members that it would be best to take out the US hook up completely, then fit a UK version in.To get the fridge working would then need some sort of voltage convertor? I would test it to see if it works before removing,it could be useful to keep it.

Cheers for the comments! I have to say the body work was done at a WV body shop in LA before it was shipped, so I cheated a bit. Still plenty for me to do as everything else is untouched.

WVAIRCOOLED - sure was late 1970 :) The door sticker says 8/70; the wiring also matched the 70 model diagram when I had to replace the indicator stalk. Would be cool if the fridge worked but it’s cracked inside. Trying and find a gas fridge the same size to replace it. As for the hookup i've read somewhere its possible to make a UK hookup lead with a US connector. The wiring inside would need to be changed but you can retain the original hookup point. Ill see if I can find it again.

As for future plans, im leaving the exterior pretty much as is. I have some pinstripe whitewall tyres to fit. I really can’t decide to lower this one or not, it drives so nice as is. I scraped through fields and dodged potholes in my last bus :)

Other plans include

*Underseal and cavity protection
*Soundproof inside
*Interior panel set/Vinyl flooring/Seat covers/curtains
*Leisure battery & Split charger
*Sterio / roof rack / bike rack & awning

AND GO CAMPING!" :D

Looking good fella, very straight and clean interior, I'm sure if your really not keen on keeping the fridge someone on here will take it off your hands...

VWAIRCOOLED - should be a simple enough job to fit a 230V power supply..... if you check it out it may well be switchable anyway, or the transformer may have several primary taps on it...

hi dude is that your uk reg in the back window if so your bus is a close relative to mine ive a 1970 deluxe reg no wrp 202h

The current fridge looks complicated, broken and unable to chill beer. :) is there any tech info about the westy fridges? maybe I could test it. There are two pipes running through the front wheel arch and into the cab but they are not connected...

That makes it a 71 model year. Production started each year in August for the next calender year.

Nice van, welcome to the site. :)

It 'should' just be a coolbox, the only pipe from the fridge as standard is a drip pipe that lets melted ice drain from the ice tray.

Maybe someone has fitted a real fridge into the old shell?

Oh, maybe it is just a cool box  I thought the contraption underneath has something to do with the fridge.. I need to take a proper look!

thanks guys! I spent most of my day at work searching the net for info. I have worked out its nothing to do with the fridge. The propane gas fridges had a bottle under the sill. Now im thinking its possibly the remains of a air conditioning unit?
