Morning all,
I have a 71 westy that I have owned for only 6 months. Will use it for now, camping with the young'uns and will resto later. Basically it runs quite well but it makes a scrapping sound when travelling along in third and fourth gear. I would appreciate some feedback to identify the problem and the required solution. I am ok on the spanners (but not as good as I think I am). Hopefully this can be a home fix issue?
Thanks men.

Mine had a little whinning sound this went after a gear box oil change, the first in 40 years I think and filled to the right level , I put in more than I got out , this may not cure it but it wouldn't hurt it
Cheers

Any clues on the best way to fill the gearbox with oil without removal?

You could try jacking the van up and using a hose attached to a small hand pump or hold a hose/funnel above the van and use gravity (it's messy but does work).

Fill your gearbox using this cheapo pump http://www.screwfix.com/p/laser-oil-suction-gun/29430?_requestid=1773514. Loads also on Fleabay http://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/i.html?_f...nkw=oil+suction+gun&_sacat=See-All-Categories

Don't try to suck oil with it - it's not designed or made to do that. Just unscrew the pipe end of the gun, pull back the plunger, fill with oil and replace the end. Takes about 500ml and if you push the end slowly will fill your box without any mess. I have two - one for the vans and one on the boat.
