NON EB but does anyone have any info on a MK2 Golf GTi

I know its not a bay but its still VW.
Thinking of buying a MK2 GTi, probably the 8v version, used to own one a few years back and need a little run about as i've finally sold the mini.
Looking through a couple of websites the Mk2's can fetch anywhere from £200 - £1000 depending on spec, history etc.
Used to belong to golf gti forum but its either closed down or having server problems.
What should i look for when viewing? What was the better engine code (vaguley remember digifant or k-jet injection)
Anything i need to know about these cars?
Like i say i used to own 1 a few years ago but since then i've had about 10 cars so my memory's full of junk when it comes to cars
