I now have a '73 bay X westy. Last weekend I traded a super body with a bad tranny for a rolling hull with a good tranny. The guy picked it up for the interior for his westy. Didn't want this anymore. I had sold my '70 westy months ago and needed to have a bay back in my life.

Going to convert it to type 1 motor. Body has no bondo, very little rust around a couple of windows. I'm going to take it back to the orignal colors, white and beige.

Hey, two of us... We can start a chapter!

You mind if I borrow your black sheep image?

there is a chapter already. its called latebay.com if im not mistaken :?

:? is right.

i guess the earlybay forum has to be superior in order to balance out the superiority of the late bus... a 'yin & yang' situation i guess

black sheep ? borrow away... i 'borrowed' it in the first place

I have a 73 as well-now in resto- 1700 rebuilt to 1800 but still with Lowlight door locks etc.
Have restored 3 eatly bays for others and couldn't find one for ourselves :)

The Bay Project

Started looking over the bay the other afternoon to see just what I had gotten myself into...
The pop up is from the '70 bay, I just need to replace the rotted out wood and put it on.

It reminds me of the black bug I had... Looks damn good from 20 feet away!
This one is more like 40 feet :)

Looking around the bus at some rust spots that will need attention soon.

Hasn't been on the roads since 2001...
Has a little rust under the windshield.

Little bit of sheet metal to strighten, from a tire blowout maybe?

Getting a look at the inside and the presents I was left. The AC unit behind the drivers seat is a Dealer installed Volkswagen item...

Looking in the engine bay... I see the need to replace the CV boots, might as well drop the tranny and do the shifter bushings too.
Will drain, and pull the tank. Get all the yuck out of it!
Also looking at the AC hoses, wiring going to need some strighting out.
The AC condensor and freon lines under the bus...

Our mechanicals are OK- just fitted rebuilt 1700 out to 1800 -less than 100oks

Long enough and finish cleaning out the back of the bay. She's pretty clean. Just a few surface rust spots that I will treat next time the weather permits.

The front will be next.

No look, you're like me, a crossover..... Still got an early fuel flap.

What we need is a sub chapter of the Crossover Coalition...

Late Bumper, Late Lights, Early Fuel Flap Club.... it's been mentioned o here before.

Okay, I see now. I thought the "Crossovers" were '72 only.
This one was made last week of Dec. '72 for a '73 release year, so they were still using the Early bay sheet metal. 8)

Thanks

The Crossover Coalition sounds good.
Late Bumper, Late Lights, Early Fuel Flap Club - L.B.L.L.E.F.F. Club might get tongue tied :p

73 Year Model Bay have as many one year only bits as 72's

My Westy is an early Aug 72 build. My Devon is a Dec 71 Build. Both bastards for getting bits for!

The blue box is a cruise control unit, The hand controls and the vacuum cylinder for it
also. Will add pic later... Cruise control installation instructions found in the glove box.

The defrost vents are toast, I'm thinking about making an cover that will direct the air
toward the windshield better than the factory (which we all know sucks).

So far I've found about $3.00 in change while cleaning it out. :)

Day 5

All of the AC system is out now. Along with about ten pounds of dirt!

With the dash now removed I can inspect the nose more and see how the rust under the windshield looks. I can also make sure the wiring is okay and get it straighten up. I can also get a better idea of what has been removed from the fuse box. Looks like wiper motor may have some issues.

I want to separate the flash indicators so only the one related to the turn will be flashing.
