I was out for a spin after replacing the front discs calipers and spindle with later >72 fully refurbed ones that i got, the pads are also brand new. I also replaced the brake line but not the hose. Theres no pulling, rubbing or any noise from the right hand side and the brakes seem good, but when i got out i could smell mild burning and the wheel was very hot to touch and the leftside is stone cold?

This was the same problem i had with the previous right hand side brake. Now i had flushed and bled the fliud and theres little give in the brake pedal. All seems well, but why would i still be getting heat?

Anyone any ideas before i take it to the mechanic as im scratching my head and i dont want to start ripping out the master cylinder?

cheers Johnny

change the hoses, they can collapse internally.
otherwise just double check the caliper, maybe its sticking.
another thing it could be is the wheel bearing is too tight

i guess it must be the hoses, as its exactely the same problem as the set up i changed. I mean i swapped everything from the trailing arms, so must be the hoses.

I have just had the exact same problem with my brakes
Inicially thought it was the caliper sticking
spoke to garage i have van sorted at (specialist vw) he said
that the master cylinders rarly fail he said very confidently it will be the flex hoses and give me a set to put on.
I only did the side that was sticking and BANG sorted but then on a
spin around the blok could then tell that the opposite side was just sticking a little did that and it was sorted
Couldn't believe the difference
Defo do the hoses well worth the £17.00 for the pair
:D :D

already replaced the hoses

still no joy. A friend thinks the piston might be rusted on it, but i bought it from a reputable well known dealer, who assured me they were fully refurbed and reconditioned. and they werent cheap. I think ill have to take it to a mechanic to look at it as i cant be arsed mucking around with calipers.

Do it yourself piss easy calipers not like the old drums at all.

plenty of rags brake fluid copper eaze and fine wire wool your well away.

i dont have a vice to hold the opposite piston in place while working out the other one to check them.

In Haynes it looks tricky enough for a novice like me. Have you refurbed your caliper before Aaron? and how long did it take. Are the caliper bolts easy to get and refurb kit? it needs a particular lubricant paste for the inside of the piston? and there are a number of seals to replace. I assume it has to be done on both sides.

Not my bus but bikes and cars a plenty....

Shouldnt take long to do if you compress one piston almost fully home with a piece of soft wood (hammer shafts are quite useful) so you dont damage the faces you should be able to get the other piston to move sufficiently to break the seal and it will lift out with a little cursing if it doesnt fall out, drop the lot into alcohol (brandy doesnt work) or petrol or spirits etc to clean and the other piston should lift out with relative ease just dont force it in so its flush with the caliper as it then gets a bit fiddly...

As to refurb kits I've seen them on line somewhere recently will trawl through my history files if I havent cleared it out in the meanwhile, bolts are readilly available in stailess steel sets on ebay and any of the small vw outlets on ebay and the likes at a few quid....Cylinder paste is available at most motor factors otherwise brake fluid......

Its sounds a pain reading the Haynes and the thought of messing with your brakes can be daunting but believe me its a doddle your first one will take a while whilst you get the feel for it, its far easier than drums and shoes no scalped knuckles fitting those fecking springs etc.. Depending on the general state a couple of hours to remove and refurb, then its fitting and bleeding which alldepends on how you do it... :D

Good luck.... :D :D
