Has anyone got any recommendations on best kit for oil temp sensor.
Everything from gauge to sender.

Also what's better dipstick sender or drain plug?

Thanks

I've got one I'd also like to fit along with a pressure sensor, but it is a screw fitting as would normally go on an oil filter take-off. I'm a bit wary of sump mounting in case it got knocked whilst on the move, and would like to retain my dipstick. Would be interested to see if there's any other points that can be easily accessed.

I have one of These from a chap on SSVC

It allows you to retain a seperate oil pressure switch, oil temperature gauge & oil pressure gauge, fits into the regulare oil pressure sender thread in the block.

Do you actually get this to read a value? I did a very similar thing with a temp sender on the beetle I owned until recently, it never read anything at all on the gauge. There is no flow of oil at that point as far as I'm aware.

Give Early VW a pm as he sells the whole lot .
I bought a set recently and it came with all the bits and gauges.
Great service too.

I had the same doubts & compared it to the sump mounted one (the same sender was previously mounted on the sump) & to be honest there is very little difference between the 2 readings, both read low (typical VDO trait) compared to a boiling water test

I must admit that I'd be sceptical of the temperature reading at that point as well - how close to the flow of oil does the end of the temperature sender end up using that adapter?

Got one of the Gene Berg style Save-my-Bug dipstick senders. It was flickering the other day and I didn't really notice until it was fairly full on (my bulbs are quite dull too), so I have also bought a cheap Piezo buzzer to attach behind the dash so that I will get a little buzz warning too. I am also going to attach a different pitched buzzer to the Genny light as they are only about 99p each!

I drilled & tapped one of the oil pressure relief spring retaining plugs. It reads OK & lets me know what "normal" is.
In this location it is also tucked up a little more out of the way than one in the sump drain plug. I know better angled ones are now available.

Davechorlton Good idea on a buzzer in the dash as lights are quite dim. However I would advise you not to fit one in the generator circuit as this will screw up the charging control circuit.

Phil.

That is a bad location for the sender  better is Oil pressure relief plug near the pully not the flywheel one,Screws right in ;) VDO # V323064

Good idea about the buzzer, where did you get yours?

Cheers

I bought a couple of these buzzers of ebay last week: (item 121391481368)

seem to work well, I use one as an indicator buzzer as my indicators don't self cancel. For the indicators you have to mount buzzer between +12v and the green indicator dashboard bulb. (not between the bulb and ground as you might imagine if you're thick like me)

Sorry - missed this. Yes I got the same or similar off e-bay. I might try the indicators too as mine self cancels one way and not the other!

That'll do, good one, thanks.

Did you install the oil light the same or ground it like you thought first?

Is 95dB earpiersing loud? I have no reference...

Cheers

The indicator dashboard bulb has 12v applied to it all the time, and the indicator switch makes the circuit to the indicators which are earthed - completing the circuit.
So if you connect buzzer between dashboard bulb and earth it will have 12v applied to it all the time. (The switch will apply a second source of 12v, making no difference)

I guess the oil and genny sensors work by making a similar connection to earth.

The volume is about right for a warning - not earpiercing, but annoying. If too loud you could wrap insulating tape around it.

For the indicators this may help
