Oil temp wiring

my dash has an oil tem guage fitted, so i thought i would wire it up, im not sure how to do this, but i'm guessing i need an oil temp sender, can i just get a dip stick one ?

or do i need to do more than that ?

sender will depend on the make of the gauge. is it vdo? or something else?
