OK, filled the tank 3 qtrs full today and then got a really strong smell of petrol in the cab driving along; when the tank had got down to half full it seemed to have dissipated, or it may be that i'd just got used to the smell by then
I don't have the complicated breather system seen in late bays, mine is a '71 with stock 1600 and oil bath/sing;e carb
I have renewed the fuel lines in the engine bay
What else should I be looking at/for?

you need to look around the neck of the filler pipe, theres a rubber sleeve that might be perished. This would require dropping the engine out as its behind the firewall.

Ian at Mayflower garage in Brixton also suggested it might be a split in the fuel breather pipe coming out of the top of the fuel tank, also another engine out job
looking at Bentley manual, it dosen't look that difficult taking engine out but would I be foolish attempting it on my own - I have a decent trolley jack and know my way around the engine - was told that gear box needs supporting - mines a '71 with the removable rear valence
bit of urgency here as we are due to go to the big chill w/e after next and then Wales a week later

if its the first time the nuts/bolts might be tight, soak them well, over night, with penetrating oil. It is relatively easy especially with the removable valence.

Just put another jack under the gearbox after you have taken the weight of the engine, this way the gearbox will be in the right place when you refit the engine.
