Hello fellow bayers, I have a few bits and bobs to do to the van so its hiding away out of the cold, I want to use POR15 stuff but i know nothing about it, can anyone point me in the right direction :D

I still have my unused chassis kit here so I can't answer regarding pros and cons, got mine from http://www.frost.co.uk

http://www.por15.com

When using POR-15 make sure you follow the instructions by the letter.
If not it doesn't stick as i found out a few years back.

DON'T GET IT ON YOUR HANDS!! (or anywhere else you don't want it!) - it will take weeks to come off....

I used this place:
http://www.rust.co.uk/home.cfm when we rebuilt the 7.
I didn't use any POR-15 (though many do) but used DINITROL 3125 and sprayed a lot of the underside/inside panels etc with it. Its like much better Waxoyl.

As Kempy says, POR-15 requires careful surface preperation, otherwise it may well just lift off...

Some good advice/tips on the site linked above...

Umm - some other interesting things on there such as fuel tank seal/cleaner/paint....

Slightly off subject - I have used Finnegens (Hammerite) No1 Rust stopper
to good effect in the past. It's quite cheap (from Wilko's) and it seems to
have an effect like phosphoric acid (Kurust) and a primer in one.

I think it got a best value award in a copy of Practical Classics I picked up to browse in WH Smith some time back.

Cheers

 Better believe it!

First time I used Por 15 I took no notice of this, after all everything comes off with a bit of soap and scrubbing right?

Does it Fuc%!

Took me a week washing my hands with gritty Swarfega until I saw the last of it of my hands and arms, as for the paint I had all over my face.......

Check out the link to an much earlier mini debate on POR15

POR15 sounds the mutts nuts in practice but if you want something that sticks to everything ie-no metal ready etc.

I've used POR-15 before but I'd use summat else next time. As said earlier this stuff is all about preparation, get it wrong and y' fooked. It's essentially a three stage process of cleaning, surface treat and then paint. Following the instructions means using all the POR-15 products so it's works out pretty expensive too.

Agree totally with above comment.

Heres a wheel arch I did (POR15). Took ages because I prepard the surface properly, it will last forever!

If you just slap it on it will peel off.

I've recently done a lot of my back end (on the bus that is, mine doesn't need painting) in POR15 . I spent a lot of time prepping it and it has gone on really well with no peeling.

It does need a bit of work before you slap it on but I think it's worth it. We all spend so much time and money on our busses so I figured the extra time and expense on this was worth it. If it can keep the rust at bay for a few years then it's a bargain.

However like people have said whatever you do don't get it on you cos it ain't coming off. Well actually it does come off eventually. I got some on my face and hands, I wasn't bothered about my hands, I just left that to come off on it's own (about 7-10 days) but I couldn't really go out in public with splops of POR15 on my face. So I gave it a good scrub with some exfoliating pads and once I'd exfoliated down to the bone the POR15 was gone but my face was a bit of a bumpy, red raw mess.

We are going to try Dinitrol for some of the rest of the bus. No idea what it's like but it has some good reviews and recommendations on a lot of restoration forums.

thank you everyone :D now i am stuck on what to do....haha well i cam taking the doors off and window out at the weekend so i still have a week to decide on what to do :D i don't mind the extra expense and my time is free to myself I just want a good product.

Im gonna try some of this stuff inside doors and box sections, ill let you know how i get on.. I hate thinking the dampness is getting to my door skins

Been researching underseal (its a riot!), DINITROL 4941 seems to be the prefered choice. Ive also seen the 3M body Shultz for sale on ebay. I know 3M products are used in the trade. Maybe this is the stuff to get? Does anyone have any info on the 3M product?
